It is said that the Confucius, the magnanimous (to borrow a term from Aristotle) Chinese philosopher, was greatly influenced by music. In describing his concept of "rituals "; he explains that rituals being a person’s everyday thoughts and actions, helped in creating hierarchical categories in people such as father/son and prince/ruled, that were grounded on mutual respect. Confucius however, exempted music from this rule, terming it as transcendent of such distinctions among people as it " unifies the hearts".
