Why is It Called “Popular Music” If Nobody Likes It?

Five reasons to rethink this "pop" music we’re force-fed from the radio.

Is today’s “Music” really Music? Here’s five questions directed at the Music Industry…

What makes a song “popular”?

  • I don’t get it. All that we hear from most people is criticism. What defines a song as popular? We’re never even given a chance to respond to a song and the radio selection is practialy communist in the way that you hear the same songs over and over again. There is so much music out there that hasn’t been heard, and it’s being masked by this canned crap you hear on a hourly basis.

What is “talent”?

  • The last time I checked, talent meant you had to be good at something. Now a days, every single song on the radio thats not Taylor Swift is completely computerized. People dont even sound normal. Any College kid with a laptop could re-produce the offbeat sounds you hear in the background. Take Kanye West for example… his SNL performance! This just proves that these people are NOTHING without their tech people.

What Makes you think that I want to hear the exact same self centered sob-story in EVERY SINGLE #^@$ing song on the radio? Why can’t “popular” be something besides the singer’s self absorbed song about absolutely nothing that matters to me or anyone else!?

  • I’m getting tired of listening to love songs. Really tired. Whether its about a highschool love/breakup or bitches at the club, I’m sick of it. Off hand, let’s see how many artists I can think of that (at least on the radio) sing about nothing else….
  • Carrie underwood
  • Taylor Swift
  • Kanye West
  • Lil Wayne
  • Jason Derulo
  • Beyonce
  • Jay-Z
  • Lady Gaga
  • Miley Cyrus
  • Britany Spears
  • Rhianna
  • Kelly Clarkson
  • Every Single one of these artists is in the “Top 20″ on the Billboard Charts this month. Taylor Swift aside (and possibly some Miley Cyrus) every single one of these artists sound EXACTLY the same when it comes to computerized garbage backing up their sad vocals. Of these artists I can only think of ONE song off the top of my head played consistently on the radio that WASN’T about the aforementioned pining over someone you cant have or, about a self-centered one on one relationship….. Disturbia by Rhianna. wow.

Whats with all the Taylor Swift?

  • Taylor Swift is a unbelievably gifted individual with incomparable talent to anyone else in the music industry. She is young, bold, loud, and beautiful. I have all the respect in the world for her but why must you over play her songs? Yea, her songs are about teen-girly stuff for the most part, but that reflects her character. A survey of 6 radio stations in ohio lasting a total of 1 minuet revealed three of the 6 stations playing Taylor, two of which were the exact same song! that’s 50% taylor swift on the radio. Period. She is a fantastic artist, yes, but her music does not need to be played every two seconds of every day. It just gets tiring.

Miley Cyrus?

  • Party in the USA has got to be the most pathetic excuse for a song I have heard in a long time. Not only does it not makes sense, I HATE the fact that the girl (or whoever wrote the song for her) put “Like Yeaaa” in the refrain. Its brainwashing. Its Stupid. Its Mindless. And it Sucks. If I wanted to hear %#^% like that I’d go sit down in a middle school lunch room. America’s little girl is loosing steam fast. Oh but wait. People like her music because the music industry KEEPS TELLING PEOPLE THAT ITS GOOD! and noone can think with their own head anymore.

A Google Image search of the two popular female stars reveals the most likely path each one will take:

Oh yeah. Miley is 3 years younger. Please think with your own brains America…

enough said.
