The Top Nine Most Awesome English Songs of All Time

Posted in: Musicouching by CHAN LEE PENG on June 23rd, 2008 | 80 Comments

Nowadays, songs have a role to play in almost every sphere of human activity. What better way to remember the best ones then to reminisce about what made them so wonderful?

Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I wa-as sleeping
And the vision that was planted
In my brain, still remai-ains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash
Of a neon light, that split the ni-ight
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs tha-at voices
Never share, and no one dare-are
Disturb the sound of silence

Fools said I, you do not know
Silence like the cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said The words of the prophet
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence

Without You – Mariah Carey

“Without You” is a ballad song written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans. It was originally recorded by Badfinger for the album of No Dice in 1970. This song remains as Mariah Carey’s biggest hit both in U.S. and outside the U.S. with its biggest hit across the Europe region. It had been raked as number 2 on the Hot 100 Airplay, number 3 on the Hot Singles Sales, and number sixteen on the Hot 100. It is indeed the best song worth listening in anyplace and at any time. You can listen to this song here.

Well, I can’t forget this evening
And your face when you were leaving
But I guess that’s just the way the story goes
You always smile, but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows

Well, I can’t forget tomorrow
When I think of all my sorrow
I had you there, but then I let you go
And now it’s only fair that I should let you know
What you should know

CHORUS:
I can’t live, if living is without you
I can’t live, I can’t give anymore
I can’t live, if living is without you
I can’t live, I can’t give anymore

Well, I can’t forget this evening
And your face when you were leaving
But I guess that’s just the way the story goes
You always smile, but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows

CHORUS 3 times

I can’t live, if living is without you.

I Just Called To Say I Love You – Stevie Wonder

“I Just Called to Say I Love You” is a ballad song written by Stevie Wonder to be included in the soundtrack to the film The Woman in Red in 1984. This song came out to be the number-one-hit in UK for as long as six weeks, number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in October, 1984, and number one on the chart of Hot R&b/Hip-Hop Songs. This song achieved its utmost success by winning awards from the Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Golden Globe. You can listen to this song here.

No New Year’s day to celebrate
No chocolate covered candy hearts to give away
No first of spring
No song to sing
In fact here’s just another ordinary day

No April rain
No flowers bloom
No wedding Saturday within the month of June
But what it is, is something true
Made up of these three words that I must say to you

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart

No summer’s high
No warm July
No harvest moon to light one tender August night
No autumn breeze
No falling leaves
Not even time for birds to fly to southern skies

No Libra sun
No Halloween
No giving thanks to all the Christmas joy you bring
But what it is, though old so new
To fill your heart like no three words could ever do

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care, I do
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart
Of my heart,
…… of my heart

    • lanne June 23rd, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Nice list Chan. I Will Always Love You though, is a Dolly Parton song. And although the words themselves are beautiful, the reason behind Dolly writing it is a complete tear jerker.

Great Job, I love Celion Dion as an artist. My first favorite song I ever had was my heart will gone on and also love will move mountians which just happens to be by her as well.

    • Johanan Rakkav July 3rd, 2010 at 12:03 pm

That’s indeed an awesome list, but like all such lists it’s highly subjective. Many (myself included) would argue that no such list would be complete without The Moody Blues’ “Nights In White Satin” and Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven”. Closer to the present, there’s Dan Fogelberg’s “Longer”. What about John Denver’s “Rocky Mountain High”? Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America”? Sting’s “Fields of Gold”? Weird Al Yankovic’s “White and Nerdy” or “Amish Paradise”? “All I Ask of You” from “Phantom of the Opera”? “Send in the Clowns”? The list could go on and on…and on… rather like Celine Dion’s lyrics. :)

    • evviesands October 27th, 2010 at 8:00 pm

Wow, lovely songs all of them. I think I’ve heard “Nothing’s gonna change my love for you in Spanish, though dunno who sang it.
BTW, isn’t “Without You” originally by Air Supply? or so I thought. The versions by Air Supply and Mariah Carey are the ones that comes to my mind.
And, why 9 and not 10? You really left me wanting more when I saw the “Hotel California” cover!
Of course, everyone has the right to come up with their own list, whether we agree with this one or not, so, why don’t you write an article too? In fact, I think this article has inspired to writr my own.
