This article is about how I feel about music today. Especially me being a young person.
In my opinion, majority of the music, especially pop music today, is lacking. It lacks substance, a story, and it has no message anymore. Not only that, the music today lacks instrumentation. It is too easy today. I really want to be a performer. But I am having second thoughts now because of the way performing is being done today. When I look at the performing from 30+ years ago, and even when I was coming up, I would rather perform that way, than the way performing is being displayed now. Now this is just my opinion. This is how I feel about it. The music today has become too commercial and less cultural. I prefer more culture, and music that comes from the heart, music that is true. It seems to be more about the money nowadays. I miss the percussion that people played with their hands. I miss the drums, bass, horns in a song. I miss good strong singing, when people held their notes, sang deep from the diaphragm. People grunted when they sang, oh, I really miss that. I am only 28 years old, but even I remember when music still sounded like real music. Now I am not saying that the music today doesn’t have good melody, or people don’t try their best, but it is just not for me compared to what I grew up listening to.
To me, there is too much missing in the music these days. It doesn’t seem complete to me. I also love the violins, and complex chord progressions in songs. You just don’t hear that as much anymore. People don’t use tambourines anymore. So that is why the majority of the music today doesn’t really appeal to me. Now I am also not saying that people don’t play instruments and do good music at all, but it is not put out enough for me. The messages in the songs back in the day used to have meaning, positiveness. People were singing about coming together as one, love, peace, understanding, joy, music, oneness, and just having fun, and enjoying life. The love songs weren’t dirty and in your face. The love songs were sensual, sexy, mysterious, but you know what they were referring to. Now they are just so in your face, raw. Some people did some in your face songs even back then, but for the most part, the cleaner music had more airplay, and the other raunchier songs were put on albums made for adults and mature audiences. The songs today are just too dirty and no mystery, nothing is left to the imagination anymore which is boring and for me personally, a great escape. What I also like about the old school music, is that the music puts a smile on my face, and makes me feel good inside my heart. And I also feel like I am in a different place. The music takes me to another place, or on a journey to another time. Don’t get me wrong, I like a few new songs out today, but they are very little. And that is because I am such a music lover.
