The 10 Greatest Songs of All Time

Undoubtedly you’ve heard every single one of these songs before, but you’d probably be more surprised by what didn’t make the list.

This is the a list of the ten greatest songs of all time, as decided by Billboard.  They generate their music ratings by both radio play, and overall sales.  They’re probably not your favourite songs, but you know all of them by heart.

The Twist, by Chubby Checker (1960)

Whether or not you love this song, you definitely don’t hate it.  Plus, it’s probably the only song your mother can dance to.  And she will, too.  Try it out sometime if she’s mad at you.

Smooth, by Santana Featuring Rob Thomas (1999)

No self respecting music-lover actually admits to enjoying this song.  Then why is it so successful?  The average self respecting music-lover lies to maintain their self respect.  You know you loved Nickelback’s “How You Remind Me” too, liar.

Mack the Knive, by Bobby Darin (1959)

This is an anomaly.  You might not have actually heard this song.  But you’re going to right now, since you’re on the internet and reading this list, right?  Just remember, it was 1959.  And this was pretty cool back in the day.

How Do I Live, by LeAnn Rimes (1997)

If you’re around my age, the only reason you know this song is you danced to it with that pretty girl in middle school.  And you’ll probably always remember it for that reason.  Plus it’s been in a zillion movie soundtracks.

Macarena, by Bayside Boys Mix (1996)

You know the dance.  Don’t even pretend you don’t know the dance.  And you’ve done that dance with a group of people before too.  You will also regret that moment for the rest of your life.  But don’t worry, we’ve punished the Bayside Boys Mix enough by not knowing anything else they’ve ever done.  They’re more embarrassed than you are.

Physical, by Olivia Newton-John (1981)

Let’s get physical, physical.  You loved Grease.  You loved Sandy.  And you loved the idea of getting physical with Olivia Newton-John.  We all did.

You Light up My Life, by Debby Boone (1977)

It’s a classic love song.  ‘Nuff said.

Hey Jude, by The Beatles (1968)

If you haven’t heard this song you should probably stop what you are doing right this second and get at it.  You know where to find it.  It’s been referenced in movies, books, even video games.  The Beatles have a million hits under their belt, but they have nothing better than this song.  For once, the charts actually reflect a song that isn’t just catchy, but actually fantastic.

We Belong Together, by Mariah Carey (2005)

You knew there was a reason Mariah Carey was famous, but it’s been hard to put your finger on it.  This should help remind you.  Just do her a favour and forget that awful movie already.

Un-Break My Heart, by Toni Braxton (1996)

A person with the body of a woman and the voice of a man sings a love song that people from all walks of life can enjoy.  And be confused by.

So there you have it.  You are probably fuming right now that not a single song on this list is your favourite.  Isn’t it funny how the stuff we love the most just simply isn’t the same stuff that everyone loves the most?  You’ve got to water it down a bit for mass consumption.

Except for Hey Jude.  Perhaps the Beatles were on to something?
