Seven Songs to Make You a Better Person 1

Music is fantastic. The more music you have, the more fantastic you are. Sounds right, right?

I play guitar
I play piano
I ride my bike as an excuse to listen to my ipod
My computer has thousands and thousands of songs on it
I love music, bottom line.

Come on, it’s not like I’m alone; I’m not the only person who does any of the things above, but I’ve got plenty of experience, “cause I”ve got plenty of time to get it. Now I’m not writing this for old veterans of music, because, to be honest, these songs are not exactly unheard of. I’m writing this for those of you looking to expand their musical horizons. These are gems, these are great, these make my day when I hear them. Well I’m done stalling, here you go…

Minnie the Moocher – Cab Calloway

Cab Calloway is a stone cold pimp, alright, anyone who says otherwise, well, forget them, give him a shot, you probably won’t be disappointed. Here’s a link to really old performance, if you can’t appreciate the music, at least laugh with me at the way they look.

Heart Full of Soul – The Yardbirds

Look, any band that had Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck has got to be good in my book. The harmonies in the chorus are just awesome, you have to love Jeff Beck’s guitar playing, there’s just not a lot to complain about. Great band, great song, great performance here .

Don’t Believe the Hype – Public Enemy

Alright, I’m trying to get a little more modern with this one, and if rap isn’t quite your cup of tea, then you’ve never heard Public Enemy, anyway, I said I was going to expand your horizons. This is intelligent rap, not Lil’ John people, so don’t think you’re just some weird white dude who likes “black people music”; listen to it here .

Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon – Neil Diamond

Any of you who have seen Pulp Fiction should recognize this one (if you haven’t seen Pulp Fiction, then forget about what I’m writing, go get it.) I just love this song, it almost sounds like an old western song or something, very mysterious; Neil Diamond writes some cool songs, for sure’. Here’s a link ; yeah he’s pretty old there, but he still rocks.

Stubborn Kind of Fellow – Marvin Gaye

I’m not even about to beat around the bush this time, I’m not gaye (pun) or anything, but I love Marvin Gaye. He’s probably one of the greatest pop singers of all time and this is one of his old classics. Just listen to it, let the music explain it for you. Here’s the link . The beginning is Stubborn Kind of Fellow, the rest are gold too though.

Sunny Afternoon – The Kinks

Awesome song, if you haven’t heard it before: 1). You’re in for a real epic one. 2). You live in a cave. (how have you not heard this before?). It’s real cool how the song’s mixed: it sounds like the singer is talking through a megaphone or something and the guitar sounds nice and old, which it is, that must’ve been tough for them to do. Here’s an actual video

Subterranean Homesick Blues – Bob Dylan

First off, if you’re trying to get in to new music, Bob is who you ought to get in to (if you can get past his voice, you can get past anything.) Next, this is nigh on the greatest video ever made, it’s just awesome. You have to at least give this one a chance, Bob Dylan is probably my favorite songwriter of all time. Here you are, prepare to be shocked.

Well that covers it for today, I mean, if you counted that’s 7 songs. If you liked it, comment, I’ll make another, really get your musical juices flowing. If you don’t comment, I will not be pleased, but at any rate, if you like any of these songs, I recommend you look further in to these bands, you’ll probably find more you like.

See you later, alligator.
