An analysis of the meaning of the lyrics of only one of the great songs from Ozzy Osbourne.
Ozzy Osbourne’s debut album after his departure from Black Sabbath,’Blizzard of Ozz’ is undoubtedly one of the best of his entire career, full of catchy and memorable songs like ‘Crazy Train’ or ‘Mr.Crowley’,two of Ozzy’s greatest hits, but there are also other superb songs on this album, one of them being the impressive and touching ‘Revelation(Mother Earth)’.
The song lyrics represent an invocation of the singer towards Mother Earth, and at the same time a cry of despair and an alarm signal towards all the wrong and reckless actions of people which cause so much destruction and suffering to our planet. In the beginning Ozzy asks for forgiveness for all these abuses the Earth is subject to from the people:’Mother please forgive them/For they know not what they do.’The appeal to history books indicates that in fact very few things have changed throughout the centuries, and all this time mankind continued to exploit and devastate our planet to the point of suffocation, bringing it closer and closer to extinction.
The second stanza of the song amplifies the singer’s feelings of disapproval towards those who don’t care about the planet they inhabit:’hell is full of fools’,’stupidity’,'They’re breaking God’s own rules’ clearly show Ozzy’s protest and cry of revolt against those cruel people who cause so much destruction in the world, but at the same time an appeal is made to their senses in the hope that they’re still some reason left in their brains infected with the lust for power and destruction:’Please let my mother live.’
The next stanzas amplify the apocalyptic visions of the song’s creator, which anticipates more havoc and misery for our planet:’I think we’re all going wrong’,'Children of the future/Watching empires fall.’The decay of the human races and its endless battles for supremacy can only lead to one final ending, the complete destruction of the Earth and of civilisation, which is evocated by Ozzy in a nightmare vision:’I had a vision,I saw the world burn/And the seas had turned red.’
And yet,in spite of all this gloomy atmosphere, there’s still hope of salvation, and once again Ozzy invokes the ‘mother’,asking her to enlighten people’s minds and make them give up the feeling of hatred towards each other which causes so much fighting and misery in the world:’To fight each other, there’s no-one wining/We must fight all the hate.’ Eventually, the verb lies in the verb must’;Mother Earth can do nothing to stop people from destructing it,it is our duty to stop fighting once and for all if we don’t want to destroy ourselves and our beautiful planet.
‘Revelation(Mother Earth)’ is a truly emotional song, whose lyrics certainly impressed many people, making them meditate on what they could do to help the Earth become a better place. It is just one of the examples which clearly show why Ozzy is and will forever be a legend of rock music.
