Anyone who knows me will tell you I consider music the single best thing to have happened to the human race. It is truly extraordinary, it says things that simply can’t be expressed through words. It is art in its purest form, it is simply amazing.
Now you can do all sorts of fantastic stuff with music, you can experiment until there are no chord progressions you haven’t tried; no order of notes you haven’t played. You can write the most beautiful two hour symphony in the world. You can hire whole Orchestras to back up your band. You can do postively everything you can with music.
Yet somehow the most successful songs will always just have four chords, the best songs will be simple. I overheard someone saying something one day: “The test of a good song is whether you can imagine the postman whitsling along with it.” Kurt Cobain swore by making simple songs, and he was majorly successful. Most Beatles songs are quite simple really; yet they are so great.
While complex songs may be fantastic, simple songs will always come out on top. I don’t know why, it’s just the way it works. It’s why we can’t seem to kill off pop.
