Pop Analysis

Pop artists usually keep hidden messages and values behind everything that is used in a pop music video. These messages and values can be found through his or her magazine images and videos. It consists of their hair, make up, costume, facial expressions, behaviour and many more elements that affect the way the audience pictures them. The first artist I will be discussing is Amy Winehouse. Amy Winehouse’s appearance sends out numerous different values and beliefs that demonstrate what kind of individual she really is. These messages and principles can be recognised immediately by looking at her: hair, makeup, facial expressions, and the costume she is wearing.

The image we looked at of Amy Winehouse is of her alone in a room staring at the camera. The image looks like a picture taken of her in the 60’s however it really is taken later on. Her hair for instance is in a 60’s beehive hairstyle which is a lot retro and elderly fashioned. Her hair shows us that Amy Winehouse likes to maintain a 60’s tradition and she doesn’t prefer the other modern hairstyles that people utilize today. She doesn’t really make her hairstyles look perfect or anything she just uses styles that she wants to please herself. The tattoos on her arm represent her makeup. It shows that she is moderately masculine and tough because we rarely see women these days having tattoos with these images. The image on the tattoo itself shows sexual connotations. She is relatively masculine with a feminine personality. Through the clothes and costume it appears that she has not made an attempt to appear dressed up or anything. This shows her music is greatly more important than being sexually attractive to men. Her facial expressions and postures meet our eyes. She leans forward as if to confide us. Amy Winehouse wants to show her feelings. She tries to send her past experiences. Her posture shows that she doesn’t let anything get in her way.

The audience Amy Winehouse tries to target would be women who identify with her lifestyle and are also strong and independent as men.

Overall the image of Amy Winehouse shows us that she wants to show her inner beauty and doesn’t bother with her outer appearance. She doesn’t try to seduce people but only ever cares regarding her music. That is different to other pop music artists like Beyonce. The image shows us that women can be just as strong and hard as men.
