Non – Rock Favorite Songs of a Rock Addict Featuring The Corrs, Mika, Nelly Furtado, Christina Aguilera and More

As a rock fan, I rarely find songs out of the genre that I like. But some songs are just too fun to ignore. Here are some of my favorite songs that are not rock.

Despite being a total rock n roll addict, sometimes really good pop or dance songs manage to get under my skin. So here are my non rock addictions and I am not ashamed to admit it:

-           Chris Cornell- Part of Me.

Chris Cornell fronted the grunge band Soundgarden in the 90s. Later he sang for Audioslave. I never cared much for Soundgarden (I find grunge a little too depressing for my taste) but adore some Audioslave songs (which usually range between hard rock and alternative rock), such as Original Fire. But Chris made this interesting collaboration with Timbaland, and then we got the addictive dance tune Part of Me.  Trust me to fall in love with a dance tune sung by a rocker.

-           Christina Augilera- Dirty, Candyman,  Fighter, Ain’t No Other Man

Cover of Back to Basics

Having despised Christina’s Britney style happy-go-lucky-pop, I found her mixed genres refreshing and a lot of fun.

Dirty is addictive and is perfect for dancing.

Fighter does include some really cool guitar riffs with a Gothic video.

Candyman- is an addictive swing/pop sort of tune shot in 50’s clothes and with really fun back vocals.

Ain’t No Other Man is also one catchy dance number with some swing influence, good beats, fun-lyrics and a 30s style video. Yes, I confess. I like 4 Christine Augilera songs.

        -     Shakira- Ojos Asi, Gypsy .

I do accuse of Shakira for pumping out one similar pop tune after the other but I do like acoustic guitar and fun lyrcis. And Ojos asi is from another era when Shakira wasn’t a blonde and didn’t rely on sex to sell.

Also on Shakira: Shakira: The Proof That Sex Sells

Listen to Gypsy:

         – Anything by Mika- Whether he does pop-rock or just pop, I have had huge fun with Mika’s songs. The addiction started with Grace Kelly and it continues.

          – Anything by The Corrs: 4 siblings:3 girls and one boy- one girl sings, they all play instruments and join in the vocals. A great musical feast including guitar, drums, piano, flute and more. One of my favorite pop-rock bands, even when  the song is just pop. Great Irish band.

        -  Nelly Furtado: I am not even sure how her music is categorized, but I am not a fan- except for Maneater that is. I love the beat, energy and video of this song.

        – Black Eyed Peas: Trust them to pump up the good old Pulp Fiction song and make it even more fun and addictive.  They write some of the most meaningless lyrics around (remember my humps?) but they are mostly good at creating fun music. I think they did their best work with this one.

    -    Anything James Blunt- Another pop-rocker, English James Blunt is an ex soldier and seems like to make music to make music to make women happy. Let’s face it, he shot to fame with You’re Beautiful, he touched a nerve with the lyrics, he is cute and well he did take his clothes off in the video. He does have a unique voice and even though I prefer thicker vocals, I enjoy his voice. I don’t know how many male fans he’s got, but this guy makes quality pop. And yes, he plays the guitar.

  -  Robbie Wlliams: I can’t stand anything by his old Take That days, although I enjoy some new Take That songs such as Patience (Robbie isn’t involved). But Robbie made some of the best pop or pop-rock songs around. I don’t enjoy all of them but with some, I just can’t get enough: Old before I do, George Michael cover Freedom, Something Stupid duet with Nicole Kidman, Kids duet with Kylie Minogue, Rock DJ…)

I just love James Blunt and have all his albums so far. Hopefully there will be another one soon. A very enjoyable article.

Christina Aguilera was born around these parts (Pittsburgh) and she is a patron of a women’s shelter that’s a few doors away from my apartment. It was big news in the city when she made a visit to the shelter. I like her genre music more than her pop. But she’s a success in her field and I admire anyone who is a success in their field no matter what that field is.

@Christine: Thanks, Christine. James is just so fun and easy to
    listen to:)

@Guy:I didn’t know about the shelter, that is admirable. Her success
is too, but I have to admit I am not as open-minded as you when it
comes to success. I celebrate it only when the success entertains me
    ;)

@Jo N: Thanks for commenting! I absolutely adore that song and
love many The Corrs songs, but that one is very special.
I had a crush on a boy at the time. A big crush and well, the
chorus really related to me;) I got the boy but it didn’t work out.
    But the song remains;)
