Music : The Source, The Life Force

Since the first humans walked this earth have been banging inanimate objects and realize tonal harmonies in all we do. Music evokes emotion so deeply ingrained in us, connecting with our inner selves in an infinite number of levels. 

From the depths of depression to high impressive life itself is music that can touch us so deeply into each step of the road. 

Someone once told me: “I do not like music” … I simply could not understand this concept of reality that did not like the music. I obviously could see how it could be like a certain type of music, but you do not like all music in all it was a totally alien idea to me. 

I was lucky, I guess, growing up, I was aware of the tastes of my “60 generation” parents and all those things hippy, with a fine selection of early blues, reggae, jazz and grooves are very crude have only lost to our modern generation super fickle. In fact, my father owned one of the first copies of the first 45 of a label called Chess. Now worth a fortune no doubt. Music has always been an important part of my life. 

So why does the music come to this most basic level? What is it about humans that makes us wish this “soul food”? Well, music is a multifaceted media. It is possible through music to create all the acoustic features used in our everyday language. In addition, these acoustic characteristics can be generated in a very defined. This makes it possible for composers to get to our most primitive state, simply by structuring the music according to preset patterns. 

The most basic musical element that responds to a rhythmic beat or pulse. If you need proof of this, then watch a newborn baby will begin to rock or move to the beat without question. This is the natural human instinct to react to a rhythm, the roots of which are deeply rooted in us all. This is the case, if you like the music or not. 

The next level of musical recognition is the awareness of the interval between certain vibrations or frequencies. In other words, the musical scale. It was not long before humans realized that certain notes work together and some notes are not – harmonic sequences and discordant sounds. 

In fact, not everything that makes a jarring sound was associated with the work of the devil, because it made the listener feel uncomfortable. These days we have moved many modern jazz musicians by the way the use of discordant sounds – something that horrifies the purists. 

A level above the musical scale is a combination of different types of musical instruments. This is what we know as pop music, orchestral music and many other genres. We like when we hear harmonious combinations of different types of instrument. These chords and harmonic sequences in touch with us in our most basic level. It is these musical progressions that can evoke such strong emotions in us all. 

Today, there is no generally accepted definition of this musical complexity to a logical and objective level. Many people say that when they hear a piece of music they really like and feel emotionally touching the hairs on your arms stand on end. This is not a scientific observation, but it is one of the few indicators we have tells us when someone is emotionally moved by the piece of music. 

To be perfectly honest, maybe scientists should just leave it alone – I think that some things were not meant to be explained. Music is music that makes us feel the way we do because of some ancient connection is transmitted from generation to generation. The best thing to do with music is just enjoy it! 

Without music the world would certainly be a very boring place.
