Metallica & Lou Reed-a combination that is very likely to produce the worst album in Metallica’s discography(even worse than St.Anger)!
There’s only one month left until a new creation with the brand Metallica on its label is released, and whenever Metallica comes with new material many people across the globe are impatient to listen to it,especially because it takes quite a long time for the former Gods of metal to create something new,and one explanation for these long intervals of time between studio albums is represented by the fact that Metallica always tries to reinvent itself and experiment with new sounds.
Anyway, this time the break between’Death Magnetic’,which was released in 2008,and the new album entitled ‘Lulu’,which is scheduled to be released at the end of October, was shorter(only 3 years),but in spite of that I’m not sure there are many fans eager to listen to this new product which is a result of a collaboration with legendary rock singer Lou Reed.I guess that when they came with this idea, the boys from Metallica thought that it would be interesting to explore new fields of experimental and psychedelic rock, but sometimes experiments can fail, and this might also be the case with this rather odd combination.Of course,Metallica is one of the bands who aren’t afraid to plunge into new and unknown territories and create music which sounds completely different from the one they made on their first 4 albums, but they shouldn’t forget that fans who go to their concerts still prefer to hear great songs like ‘Seek and Destroy’,'Master of Puppets’,'Creeping Death’ and many other fantastic tracks from their first period.I don’t think there are too many people who would like to hear songs from ‘Load’,'Reload’,'St.Anger’ or even ‘Death Magnetic’ instead.
3 years ago when ‘Death Magnetic’ appeared many of Metallica’s fans had began to hope that their idols might go back to their roots and make music closer to the greatness of the eighties, but the new album is very likely to destroy their illusions.’Lulu’ was inspired by ‘Earth Spirit’ and ‘Pandora’s Box’,two works which belong to German writer Frank Wededkind, which tell the story of a the life and relationships of a young abused dancer.Ever since they were published these works also inspired a silent movie and even an opera, and now it’s time for them to be adapted for metal.A week ago Metallica and Lou Reed issued a first sample that gave their fans a pretty good idea about what they should expect from this album, the song entitled ‘The View.’
Judging by the initial reactions of many fans and the number of dislikes and negative comments this song has managed to attract on Youtube so far,it appears that most Metallica and Lou Reed fans aren’t satisfied at all by this cooperation.I have to say that I also think ‘The View’ is far from being one of Metallica’s greatest songs, and if the entire album sounds close to it we can say that ‘Lulu’ is very likely to become the worst Metallica album.Of course an album can’t be judged after listening to only one song,so I still hope that ‘Lulu’ won’t be that bad after all,but I doubt it.Metallica and Lou Reed just don’t match,it seems to be a failed experiment.Anyway,in a few weeks we’ll find out if ‘Lulu’ can win the hearts of the fans,in spite of all the criticism caused by the first song they released from the new album,so let’s wait and hope that it won’t be as bad as it seems!
