Music is one of the oldest and finest forms of human expression. It is one of the most advanced arts that anyone could see in the means of expression deemed most popular or suitable at a particular time. When we are happy, we celebrate by listening to our favorite kind of music. When we are sad, we like to reflect in the company of slow and soft music. Such is the power of music!
From listening to our favorite Bhajan in the morning to a soft song at night, music gives a positive feeling throughout the day. Music can interpret and clarify our feeling because the structure of music is parallel to the structure of feelings. Feelings are composed of emotions, sensations, moods and passions. Music has long been used to deal with people’s emotions. Good music has direct access to the emotions. As such it’s a fantastic tool for tweaking our moods. Moods are normally aroused by emotions and passions, mixing in with them so thoroughly that we are unaware of their origin. This is often the result when we listen to music.
Just by the beats of melody music can change one’s state of mind, attitude and tone. It can sadden or excite the listener. Some music is associated with gloomy moods, and others associated with exhilaration. Bouncy music evokes happiness and soft vibrating instruments evoke feeling of peace and calm. Music sounds the way feeling feels; no art can reach into our life more deeply than music.
“If music be the food of love, play on”, a beautiful extract from William Shakespeare’s play “Twelfth Night” has become proverbial. Music and Love are very intimate things. Music rouses and enriches the feeling of love. Anyone who has been in love has been able to turn to any station and say this music is speaking to me. Love is sentimental and goes well with music. It tickles the heart and mind, causes a pleasant sensation and intensifies the flame of love.
Music is a part of our existence, but we do not fully understand it. The beauty of music is found in every soul. Music causes a response in humans is undeniable, it do so by some form of direct appeal to our inner selves, our emotional sides. One of the strategies of music is it can accomplish more than one goal at a time. Uplifting music distracts the mind from unpleasant thoughts; entertain us while traveling, reading or surfing web, which can easily fill the silence. Sad, soulful music provides solace, encourages daydreaming, sliding into old memories and exploring the past.
Music is learning, a therapy, and teaching tool. To lead a healthy life, we need to incorporate music. Whether playing it, listening to it, or using it. Music is a therapy because of its positive changes in human behavior. The therapy consists of singing, playing instruments, moving to music, and listening to music. This builds your communication skills, motor skills and emotional development.
Music has the ability to influence those people who listen. The influence that music has throughout the world is immeasurable. Music evokes many feelings, surfaces old memories, and creates new ones all while satisfying a sense of human emotion. Music has a direct impact on heart, mind and soul. The beautiful sensation which music creates is inexpressible. Like a dream, one cannot explain music in words. One has to hear, with clear senses, to touch the mesmerizing beauty of music.
