Internet Radio Vs Local Internet Radio

The radio of the future has intruded on the radio of yesterday.

Here in my hometown I like to listen to some of the local stations that play Jazz, Rock, Blues and from time to time I like to hear some of the radio talk shows. Though I have been on the internet for years, I have never taken the time to listen to the radio stations online until just recently. Most of the time I would just listen to my music on CD or mp3 player on a constant play list and that was fine for a while but I felt that it lacked an elemental subject. The DJ! There is something about the guy behind the mic speaking in between songs or like the Bob & Tom Show, make an entire radio show doing what most people like to do, Talk. I found that by suing Google to locate a couple of favorite stations I was also able to find music from around the nation.

Radio Locator is a great resource for finding your local stations on the internet. The website is very easy to use too. From the main page one can search by city/zip code, US radio call letters [KKFM], station format, US state or even the world. I have found that though every radio station is listed only the one that have a lightning bolt next to them have an online listening interface to listen to them live. Not all stations have there own website and for the ones that do you can read up on the radio personalities that exhibit themselves on the air or the contests that are being offered at that time. A very interesting website.

Taken right from the website “KGNU is independent, non-commercial, community radio for Boulder, Denver and beyond”. I once took a trip to Denver when I was a kid and was introduced into Denver radio. I loved to listen to the topics of the big city and how such a city lives. For me there is something interesting about patrolling the Downtown area listening to whats the “haps”.

KKFM is Colorado’s only real classic rock, or so they say. I have listened to this station since I was a kid. This is my daily fix for Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath. Most if not all the time I spend in the car is tuned to KKFM. I really like to listening to the Bob & Tom Show on my commute to work. These guys make going to work better. If you have not heard of these guys take a trip to http://www.bobandtom.com/ . Taken from Wiki “Their program has been established by Bob Kevoian and Tom Griswold at radio station WFBQ in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1983, and syndicated nationally since 1995. The show is a comedy variety show. Each day, there are usually several guests on the show, including many comedians seeking a national fan base”. So check them out.

On the other hand there are some internet radio stations that just have a play list of songs that you can choose from and play just like you would your mp3 player. Most of these websites have a free interface and have a members area that let you choose a wider range of songs or have an unlimited skip function. All of these websites are basically the same, though others like last.fm offer a social networking aspect of use.
