Influence without even trying.
It finally happened. My son is now listening to Christian metal. He finds Barren Cross and Stryper a tad boring but he loves Mortification and Living Sacrifice which is funny because as a wee lad I loved the thrash metal. I scared a lot of my Christian friends because I loved Tourniquet, Believer, and the like. They found it a bit scary which I can understand. I had no idea that some day my love of the metal would lead my son to Christ.
It all started with me branching out into Flyleaf, Paramore, and Skillet. He picked up on it and decided to go heavier. I say too heavy but hey, if he likes it and it glorifies God I approve. He discovered Underoath, Demon Hunter, which I find a bit noisy. The point is that all of those conservative Christian folks were wrong. Not only did the music I listen to get him thinking about a relationship with God but it got us talking about religion which is pretty sweet. The music is in fact a great witnessing tool so to all those conservative Christian folks who said that Christian music was bad were wrong and it brought me and my boy a bit closer. My hope is that he decides to get saved but I won’t pressure him I promise.
The bands that made it all possible? Eternal Decision, Living Sacrifice, Skillet, Hawk Nelson, Decyfer Down, Grave Robber (one of my personal faves), Flyleaf, Believer (Sanity Obscured is one of the masterpieces of Christian metal), Mortification, Deliverance, ummm The Crucified….. The one question my son asked me was do I miss my old music? Ummm no! The music I listen to now is a part of who I am. I rock for the Lord. Cheers
