Think back in your life and consider the number of times you have relied on a song or some instrumental tune to help you clear your mind or make you feel better or worse. How often do we as emotional machines take the opportunity to let music influence our lives? For most people, it is safe to say that most everyone has taken music and let it work a little magic in their lives to some degree or another.

So, why is it that we feel compelled to gravitate towards a medium where our emotions are enhanced; possibly even exacerbating the circumstances of the moment? Ultimately it is a matter of choice; that almost goes without saying. However, the consequences of this choice may very well create an increased awareness that, in turn, may become our ally or our nemesis.

For argument’s sake, take a moment to reflect on the last time you cranked up the sounds of your favorite time of life. Ask yourself, “Why did I choose that song?” Perhaps, the sound, the lyrics, even the title played a role in your purpose behind electing that song as your avatar, if you will. Using the means by which you can find solace and comfort during tough times are often an escape from what you have already been through at least once before; music is a great device for such.

In this sense, music becomes a tremendous influence; positive or negative, the choice is solely yours. There is absolutely nothing wrong with allowing a song to become that safe haven, the quick escape, or the quiet oasis for taking thoughts of discouragement or pain and setting them aside momentarily.

As a means of self-preservation, some find it a comforting concept to listen to music. The range of songs one has at their disposal is virtually endless. Essentially, the emotions felt are of significance to any one person. This is what will usually guide the thoughts and actions as to what will eventually become a theme song or instrumental to soothe the soul.

Healthy or not, most will lean towards what they perceive as being a relief, a reprieve, a positive stressor in order for their anxiousness to be alleviated. Frequently, the act of identifying what causes stress in our live leads us to figure out how to avoid such situations or issues in the future. In the process, there will also be the inclination towards imprinting on our minds something that is indelible with positive overtones and images.

Finding healthy means, like music, for settling the mind and calming the spirit presents new opportunities to explore as an alternative to future negative experiences or thoughts. Indeed, the thoughts one possesses and dwells upon are those which can impact life so profoundly. Gaining control of what stays in our thoughts allows a new found freedom to take paths with less resistance to what we want included in a future free from negativity and unhealthy stress.
