From January to December: A Song a Month

January – Pilot

Pilot were a Scottish pop rock band formed bye two ex-members of the Bay City Rollers. Written by David Patton and Alan Parsons, this song was the bands biggest hit in the UK, reaching the top spot in the charts. Ironically, although being released in January, the three weeks it spent at the top spot were in February.

Two Days in February – Goo Goo Dolls

This song was never released as a single, being as it was an album track. It appeared as the closing track on the Goo Goo Dolls album Hold Me Up, released in 1990. It was an album that has often been described as their last true great ‘garage’ album.

Ides of March – Iron Maiden

Opening track to Iron Maidens second album ‘Killers’, this instrumental may be brief but did set the tone for the rest of the album. The album this song came from is noteworthy as it was the last album Iron Maiden released with their original singer Paul Di’Anno. He was replaced by Bruce Dickinson soon after and Iron Maiden went from strength to strength.

April Fool – Soul Asylum

Another song that was never considered as a single but did take pride of place on what is arguably Soul Asylum’s greatest album – Grave Dancers Union. The album included the hits Somebody To Shove and Black Gold aswell as the worldwide smash Runaway Train.

(Then Came The) Last Days Of May – Blue Oyster Cult

This song came from Blue Oyster Cults self-titled debut album. It is clear to see where there influences came from. The song was never released as a single; none of their early stuff was. To help promote the album, Blue Oyster Cult toured with Alice Cooper and the Byrds.

Junebug – B52’s

This song was another alubm track that wasn’t released as a single. It featured on the album Cosmic Thing, which was also home to the B52’s most famous song ‘Love Shack’. It was released in June 1989. The song Junebug is about a woman who lives in the jungle – or something!

July – Ocean Colour Scene

One of the most successful ‘Britpop’ bands, Ocean Colour Scene had many hits and this was one of them, albeit not too high in the charts. It peaked at number 31. This song was used as the theme tune to the TV spin-off of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

August – Love

The song August came from the album called Four Sail, it was the fourth album by Love. Apart from Arthur Lee it was a whole new line up for the band but the style of music was very similar. The album was the pick of the best songs recorded by the new line-up to fufil the contract obligations of Elektra records.

It Might As Well Rain Until September – Carole King

Although Carole King’s solo career didn’t peak until after 1970, this sond was released in the early years of the 60’s. It reached number 3 in the UK charts. Carole King was half of the writing partnership Goffin and King, who throughout the 60’s wrote many top hits for many different artists.

My October Symphony – Pet Shop Boys

This song is taken from the album Behaviour, which was released in 1990. The song was never released as a single. It is an atypical style of the Pet Shop Boys.

November Rain – Guns and Roses

November Rain reached number 4 in the UK charts and number 3 in the US. Appearing on the Use Your Illusion 1 album, the song is a standard rock song. Its length puts it up there with Stairway to Heaven and Bohemian Rhapsody. The two guitar solos included put it in a different league altogether!

December 63 (Oh What A night) – Four Seasons

Number one in the US  and number 1 in the UK in 1976, this happens to be one of the most successful songs ever. The Four Seasons were led by Frankie Valli, the song itself was written by original member Bob Gaudio.
