Five Songs You Adore From Musicians You Don’t Normally Care About

Sometimes musicians you don’t really like or care about songs you just love. What are your personal "one hit wonders"?

You are probably familiar with the concept “one hit wonder”. There are lots of bands and singers who just made one popular song and later either disappeared from the face of the earth or they just never made something even remotely popular. However, I am going to use this concept much more differently here.  The band or singer might be insanely popular with tons of successful songs but you only like a song or two from them. Either the general style isn’t your cup of tea or you just don’t really care about the other songs. But one song in particular is irresistible to you. So I will share some of mine. And hopefully, you will give yours.

Radiohead- High and Dry.

I have been familiar with their songs for over a decade and Radiohead is just too depressing for my taste. I don’t like the vocals, the music or the lyrics. But just when I was sure I disliked all of their songs, I heard High and Dry. It is an adorable acoustic little song and I loved it. Maybe Radiohead fans will disagree but I find it to be the most un-Radiohead song ever. And that’s why I love it.

Muse- Supersonic Black Hole.

Everything I said about Radiohead pretty much goes for Muse as well. I can’t stand the high-pitched vocals. And the music is more electric than rocknroll. However this song’s music is so good, catchy and addictive that I just love it. I discovered it while watching Twilight and the song was used perfectly at a baseball game. Oh, it wasn’t any game. It was a baseball game between super-fast vampires with supernatural capabilities. Imagine the strength and the speed and combine it with the song. I still would prefer another vocalist but hey, I can go high-pitched for this one song.

Here’s the scene from the movie. Not great visual quality but it does the trick.

Anouk- Nobody’s Wife

This song appeals to my independent and feminist nature. I love the music, they lyrics and the vocals everything The energy is great, the video is cool and the singer is just the reflection of that free spirit. I listened to Anouk’s other songs and while they are pretty OK, they lack this energy. So if you sayt Anouk, I will say Nobody’s Wife.

Blur – Song 2

After listening to Song 2,  I had thought Blur was the one when it came to bands. But I can’t even stand most of their songs and find some to be just barely tolerable. However Song 2…. It is my favorite party song, fitness song, karaoke song. I love this song whenever and wherever. Now, it would even be on my list of my top 15 songs ever list. But the band? Brit-pop is not my thing.

Lenny Kravitz- Are you gonna go my way?

Brilliant rock anthem. Just brilliant. Now, I have nothing against Kravitz. He is a terrific performer and has a really good voice. But if you took away every Lenny song apart from this, I wouldn’t miss them much. But you just can’t take this song away. I love it. It is all about dancing,head-banging and energizing. My special thanks to Kravitz for an amazing song.

Awesome songs and awesome musicians. But I think Radiohead is really not suitable for this list. Instead, Blue October’s song Hate Me should replace High and Dry. Anyway … loved this post. Thumbs up !!

I must be getting old! Lenny and Radiohead are the only ones I’ve even heard of, and I’m not familiar with Radiohead too much…

I’m so retro that I know very little about these bands.

@shamyl: Thanks. Well, of course it is subjective. For me it is High and Dry because it is very uncharacteristic of me to like a Radiohead song and the song isn’t their style so its there. Will look up the song you mentioned.

@ Bo Jack: You are not getting old. You just don’t remember the 90s:)

@ I am retro too normally but hey, these are the guys I don’t normally listen to. That’s why they are on the list:)

These are all new to me too. I really am getting old. An enjoyable post.

    I enjoyed the songs!

@ Christine: There is no old in music taste. According to the dates of some of these songs I should be in my 30s. I am not. I just discovered them later then they were released.

@wonder: Thanks, Wonder. I am glad.

You are right. There are songs that stay in your head even though you don’t listen to their other songs. Mine would be Hey Ya by Outkast.

  • zoeyclark April 30th, 2010 at 6:55 am

@ Videomark: I knew I forgot that one:) I like that song but not outkast. Oh, and Idlewind blues- their another uncharacteristic song that I like.

I really didn’t like Song 2 when it came out but now I love the bounciness of it, makes you want to jump around! Agree with the Radiohead tune, they’re usually far too depressing but this is definitely very different for them.

    Thanks for the comment.
With Blur, I fell in love with the bounciness of Song 2 and I am still addicted. And high and dry is so relaxing, I can’t believe it is Radiohead!

    Danke schön, Xenon:)

I should come back with a 2nd list that includes Pump it. I am addicted to that song. With no doubt, for me it would be “just a girl” :)
