Music is a powerful creation. By its very design, it invokes a storm of stirred emotions, moving seas of unbridled passion within the core of our very soul.
Music.
Music.
Everywhere, but not a song to seek
And then, from the silence comes a thunderous rumble.
Electricity released!
Charging. Powering. Tuning.
Tiny circuits, microchips and processors,
Compacted, firmly – held in hand.
Connecting to the world on a global scale.
Seeking the journey into the mysterious unexplored.
Unearthing a trove of treasures that are unlike anything known before.
This website offers music lovers great music to listen to, but not to download. The unique twist is that listeners can earn points by bumping up songs that you like that catches on with other listeners and they too can bump the song up, too. Listeners are the ultimate judges of the song’s success or failure. It’s kind of like American Idol on steroids.
If you are planning a party or preparing to travel and need some great music to download on your iPod, so your party will rock the house down or your travels is enjoyable, then Spinjay.com is the place to visit. Put together your own playlist and submit it to the Spinjay.com community to challenge your playlist against theirs in a voting type election system. You ultimately receive the winning playlist and the playlist submitter earns points for winning the vote.
Songza offers music fans the opportunity to search for and listen to the artist or song that they want to on the web. Users are not required to subscribe or pay for the services unlike Last.fm or Rhapsody does. An added bonus Songza pays for licenses from all of the major performing-rights organizations (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC) and these companies pay the publishers and writers in proportion to the number of plays they get on Songza, so the artists are getting paid and the listener are getting to listen to free music on the web.
Use this music sharing website to discover new artists and songs through its community of music loving listeners. Share your favorite music with others in the community and earn credit, so that you can use to get free songs of your own. Discover new recording artists and bands through listening to music that is being broadcast by the artist on ItBreaks. Listeners can comment on, share and evaluate the songs that they listen to and if a song receives enough favorable feedback, then that song moves to the frontpage in real time. ItBreaks’ members can customize their account with numerous features including groups, albums, playlists, ranking, etc.
This music website offers free and legal MP3s that are submitted by its member community. smackme420 May 26th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
As mentioned by a previous commenter, Dizzler was overlooked. I am a proud listener and recommend this site to everyone!
Andy May 27th, 2008 at 12:46 am
Cut the author some slack; there are only 15 he could pick for the list, and it’s his personal preference. So he forgot a few; make your own list and see how many people complain that you forgot suchandsuch.com or soandso.org because they’re “better.”
theangusburger May 27th, 2008 at 5:49 am
Guys. He gave you 15 free music sites that he spent time finding and checking out. Give him a break and stop telling him he missed a few sites.

Have you heard of OurStage.com
It’s the coolest place to discover emerging music…
Nic May 29th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
One of my favorites is songerize.com
It doesn’t work great for listening to music continuously (as you have to select each song one at a time when the previous one finishes), but it’s my go-to place when I want to listen to some random song I heard somewhere.
Richard May 30th, 2008 at 12:26 am
ilike.com? garageband.com?
Jaime May 30th, 2008 at 12:27 am
Dude- Pandora should be on this list! It’s an amazing site that you can use that you basically type in an artist/song and it plays music by that artist and also similar artists too! It’s sweet! Check it out!
Wes May 30th, 2008 at 12:36 am
Hey! Where’s Pandora? The Music Genome Project gives better recommendations than any other site.
rashad May 30th, 2008 at 12:44 am
good point wheres pandora, pitchforkmedia, kcrw, di.fm, or the hype machine?
Alan May 30th, 2008 at 12:50 am
Check out Soundflavor – lets you upload your iTunes playlists and turns them into video playlists. Cool widget too.
rashad May 30th, 2008 at 12:52 am
very disappointed that pandora is not on this list, it is the best so far in customizing your radio station to your mode (like musicovery), it has a very wide range of music, they are adding music all the times, and the engine behind it is comparable to none. tisk tisk.
brett bronson May 30th, 2008 at 12:52 am
what about pandora??
rashad May 30th, 2008 at 12:55 am
also i am not ragging on the author, i just feel like none of these sites should even considered being mentioned before pandora because none of them really compare through ease of use, layout, and power of the site. i’m going to stop posting :/
Srini May 30th, 2008 at 12:58 am
Nelson,
You can download songs on thesixtyone. It’s up to the artist to decide if they want to allow downloading. I find that most allow it.
Russell May 30th, 2008 at 12:58 am
My fav slacker.com ——- great list. thanks
Conrad May 30th, 2008 at 1:23 am
thesixtyone FTW.

THESIXTYONE. OMG.
DAG May 30th, 2008 at 3:26 am
hypem.com is by far the best
Tess May 30th, 2008 at 3:50 am
Hype Machine is good but limiting since it’s coming from blogs, most of which more or less tend to cluster and cover the same stuff. Remember when everyone jumped on the Vampire Weekend bandwagon on Hype Machine. Hype Machine, aptly named.
Trying out Thesixtyone and it’s proving to be incredibly addictive. I love playing a&r scout!
Woo May 30th, 2008 at 6:13 am
No hypem.com? The Hype Machine ftw!!!
Lizzy May 30th, 2008 at 6:45 am
The only 4 that matter: Hypem, lastfm, thesixtyone, Pandora. Everything else is just noise.
Doug May 30th, 2008 at 8:24 am
imeem.com
RPaulsen May 30th, 2008 at 8:56 am
HypeM covers my blogs, last.fm scrobbles my tunes, and thesixtyone makes it fun to find spanking new music. What a wonderful gameplan.
@Doug: I used imeem for a few days once and found it be a pretty subpar experience. Hard to use, something that probably suits teenagers will loads of time and very limited taste.
barry shaw May 30th, 2008 at 8:58 am
WOW… THE BEAUTY OF MUSIC AND THE INTERNET
SO WHAT WOULD YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT ARTISTS ALLOWING YOU TO DOWNLOAD AND DISTRIBUTE.. FOR FREE…. DO YOU THINK THIS IS A GOOD IDEA… WOULD YOU SUPPORT THE ARTIST IN OTHER WAYS POSSIBLY???
Paulard May 30th, 2008 at 9:23 am
IMEEM.com. Has to be by far the best service to use. High quality streaming content. @ barry: Most of these sites are STREAMING sire you can rip the stream but you have to convert it to mp3. On the other note, these streaming sites make their money by having affiliate sites on AMAZON and APPLE. Thats how you can support artists, the developer commonuity and social media.
BrentP May 30th, 2008 at 9:46 am
What, no love for payplay.fm? (http://payplay.fm/) oodles of indie artists, lots of genres, free downloads simply for having an account and DRM-free paid downloads? I’m a huge fan of the place.
Jake Good May 30th, 2008 at 9:57 am

imeem.com
Music on demand. Playlist creation. Win.
Jon May 30th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
I have been using Pandora for a long time and stumbled across this site and thought, wow, there are so many other music resources that are considered better than Pandora? And then I checked these out and no. Pandora should be your number 1 by leagues.
delfin1 May 30th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
i haven’t tried hypem.com and pandora.com is pretty good too. Don’t forget imeem and youtube, nothing beats these too for the amount of music and music videos available.
rafal May 30th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
don’t forget lyricsfly.com with free mp3s and lyrics
MixtapesRHistory May 31st, 2008 at 4:38 am

Jay Valatka June 10th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
The big plus at imeem.com is the “Random” link. You’ll never know what you’ll hear next. That’s where 50% of the material in my playlists come from.
(And, by the way, RPaulsen, it isn’t difficult to use the service. And my taste in music varies wildly. And I’m not a teenager. And I don’t have a lot of time on my hands. You should probably go back and take another look.)

Nelson, Nelson, Nelson... June 17th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Why are 3 of your 4 articles basically the same thing and why do so many people read them all???
Nelson Doyle June 18th, 2008 at 3:38 am
Hi Nelson, Nelson, Nelson -
If you have read each of the three articles that you are referring to, then you will have also noticed that the articles do contain different free music sites. I do not like repeating a particular website in every article that I write, so I do try to give a little bit more fresh (for me) information in every article. Besides, if this were strictly a music blog than I assure you that every entry would share some similarities, but the would still each be an original.
As far as why people read my articles or any articles for that matter, really they are the ones to answer this question better than I can. As for me, I write to entertain my audience first and foremost.
The potential earnings that I make as a content writers is only the reward earned – mine you. It is not easy to earn a living as a content writer without first putting in long hours researching, writing and marketing the articles that you write. If you don’t believe me, then give it a try yourself. You will learn very fast that it takes a lot of hard work and especially above all else, listening to your audience/readers in the comment section and all across the Internet, too. Write for them, then when really feeling creative don’t be scared to darn to write something completely new in topics and writing style. This is all part of sharpening your edge as a writer.
Since I write for the market I also write articles on a wide range of subject sometimes weeks in advance, before ever submitting them to the publisher. One the best lesson that I learned about successful marketing techniques, is that the difference between those new product launches that succeed and those new product launches that usually fails is normally a timing issue. Launch (release) your product (in this case, it would be the articles that you write) too early and risk missing your target audience at its largest gathering and the same thing really goes for launching too late, too. Perfect timing launches are carefully planned and tracked, so information collecting and a little luck, your new product will be good enough to become popular among the readers online and I do not have any control over that reaction in the readers.
Not every article that I write performs well. I have more misses than hits.
Thank you for taking notice of the 3 articles that you had referred to, and making you feeling known.
God Bless,
Nelson Doyle
