My review on Diana Krall – Live in Paris.
What makes a live stage performance worth filmed and released… and re-released again as a live album?
If you love to watch live music performance, sometimes you will find that an anonymous street music performer gave his best performance on street, while some famous musicians performed like a school band on stage. Some people even judged that some musicians are better stay in recording studio than perform on stage.
On November 29th -December 2nd 2001, beloved jazz vocalist & pianist Diana Krall gave one of her most remarkable performance in Olympia Theatre, Paris. Diana Krall performed wither band, played some tracks form her previous album such as “All For You”, “Only Trust Your Heart”, etc.
One main factor that makes this live performance remarkable is… improvisation. Improvisation is the soul of jazz music, but not all musicians able to perform smooth improvisation live on stage. Diana Krall gave new depth and atmosphere on her piano play rather than followed studio version of her repertoire. Probably her best performance on this live album is on “Fly Me to The Moon”. Krall gave a wonderful treatment to this track, accompanied by Anthony Wilson (guitar), John Clayton (bass) and Jeff Hamilton (drum). Alan Broadbent as music director/conductor also gave his best touch on “Let’s Fall in Love” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.” Krall’s husky and charismatic vocal matched perfectly with her piano play.
It’s no wonder that this album won Grammy Award for best jazz vocal album and ranked number 8 on the Billboard Magazine’s best jazz album of decade. This album was released on 2002 in audio CD, DVD, mp3, and LP format, sure it will be one of the best collectible jazz album from present years.
