So I am starting a new thing where I publish a Top Five… every day. The rules are I pick a topic, and I list my Top Five things in that category, in no particular order. These will most likely all be pertaining to modern media.
I will post my Top Five, and then Repost it with explanations of why they are my Top Five.
Top Five Comforting Albums…
1) The Wall – Pink Floyd
2) Only By The Night – Kings of Leon
3) Ágætis Byrjun - Sigur Rós
4) Live at Radio City – Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds
5) The Bends – Radiohead
1) The Wall – Pink Floyd
This is an album I grew up with. This simple fact is where I get most of the comfort from. But all in all the album is really not peaceful. It is violent and twisted. But the melodies are nice, and the dark, forsaken-ness of it all really hits me deep inside. If I was not such a constant listener of this album, this would prob disturb me. But since I grew up listening to it, before I actually listened to the content, I only heard the beautiful and peaceful melodies. The sickness of it all came to my realization later, when the album was already a comfort for me. This I suppose added another level of comfort, I guess which was me feeling happy that I am not as sick as Pink, the main character of the album. All in all, it may be a highly personal choice, but it is comforting, and I would recommend it to anyone having a bod, or good, day.
2) Only By The Night – Kings of Leon
What a terrific album. It opens with Closer, which although the lyrics are eerie, has such a calming tone. Continuing through the album there is not a single song that I do not like. Use Somebody is such a terrific song, and one of my favorite to go late night driving to. This is just a fantastic album, with an overall calming tone throughout it. I can’t say too much more than that.
3) Ágætis Byrjun - Sigur Rós
So you most likely have never heard of this album, or this band. It is only by a vague coincidence that I do know and love this band. It is a great band to love, so hopefully I can spark that little weird interest in you that gets you to check them out. This is the story about how I came to love them. I am in my high school marching band. My sophomore year, our ballad was a song from this band, entitled Staralfur (you may know this song if you have ever seen the movie Life Aquatic, with Bull Murry, its at the very end) So its a really cool, and a really beautiful song. Everything by this band is in the Icelandic language, because that is where they are from. Its a beautiful tongue, and makes for excellent music. So I probably would have looked no further into them but I was telling my government teacher about our ballad and she told me that she loved Sigur Ros. She is a weird girl, but really cool. She told me to download this album, and see if I like them. Need I not say that I loved teh entire album, and the comfort of not knowing what any of it means. The combination of this unknown beautiful language, and the overall level of chill relaxation of the album made me fall in love. You should check them out. They are really cool.
