A collection of some of the most amazing covers ever made.
I have many loves musically, but none so great as cover songs. Through the years it has become a near obsession for me. Something about the concept of originality through duplicity, I think. So many different possible variations from such narrow parameters. Hearing different interpretations of essentially the same piece. So here is a list… it’s been a labor of love for me. There is no order to these… each one is brilliant in its own manner. I beg you, though… don’t simply skim the list. Take the time to sit and listen. Appreciate the artistic interpretation of each. Share your thoughts, and if you know of a gem I may have missed, I would love to here….
and so we begin.
“Games without Frontiers” Echo of Souls
This song was originally done by Peter Gabriel, and was an absolute masterpiece. Covering a song of this magnitude is a risky proposition at best, especially for a relatively unknown band such as Echo of Souls. Instead of falling on their faces, they created a version that is every bit a powerful as the original. Couldn’t find a youtube connection, so you’ll have to look at their myspace page. I promise you, it’s worth the trip.

“Paint it Black” Deadsy
Another legendary song, but in this case the cover may actually outdo the original.

“I believe in Miracles” Pearl Jam
Without the Ramones, there would be no punk. That Simple. Many bands have covered their songs, but this is the only time I thought the cover outdid joey and the boys.

“Lake of Fire” Nirvana
I was not one of the droves who thought Kurt Cobain could walk on water, but I do believe he had moments of brilliance. This Meat Puppets cover was one of them.

“Easy” Faith no more
A wonderful cover of Lionel Richie and the Commodores classic. All that much more impressive because it’s so much different from their body of work. A wonderful curve ball from a truly revolutionary band.

Nice list. I’m embarrassed to say I’d only heard one of these before. I would add the Ramones version of “What a Wonderful World”, Bauhaus’ “Ziggy Ztardust” and Siouxsie and the Banshee’s “Dear Prudence” but that’s just because I’m a big ol’ goth.

Great selections. I like that you included a couple that made a little gold out of crapola originals.
