Cello Lover: Symphonic Metal

Cello is classical instrument. Many claim that is boring and old fashion so far from modern times. Gentlemen from Finish metal band Apocalyptica change stereotypes about this instrument and reinvented cello. Since then cellos sound sexy and seductive creating symphonic metal.

Apocalyptica was formed in 1993 in Helsinki. 4 guys (Eicca Topppinen, Paavo Lotjonen, Max Lilja, Antero Manninen) from very prestige Sibelius Academy decided to create something unique and different. As they said “ We play metal on cellos because we can’t play guitars”. And their great journey with amazing metal music world started by recording their first album “Plays Metallica by 4 cellos”. The album consisted only Metallica covers. The second album Inquisition symphony was slightly different. This time band decided to included three their own pieces as well as covers of Metallica, Pantera , Sepultura and Faith no more.

The road of evolution. Third album called “ Cult” was truly unique and all what Apocalyptica is about ( beautiful sound, metal, some classic and most their original compositions all mixed with genius of cellists).

The next years gentlemen experimented with sounds, moods,  vocals, different musicians and culture influences.  In mean time the band left Antero Manninen and Max Lilja and Apocalyptica gained two new members Perttu Kivilaakso and Mikko Siren. All together the band  recorded seven albums: Pays Metallica by 4 Cellos(1996), Inquisition symphony(1998), Cult(2000), Reflections(2003), Apocalyptica(2005), Worlds Collide(207). The current one was recorded in 2010 and called Seventh Symphony. Every album is different and includes some new sounds.

Apocalyptica cooperated with many musicians and vocalists like : Dave Lombardo from Slayer, Till Lindeman and Richard Kruspe from Rammstein,  Gavin Rossdale from Bush, Max Cavalera ( Ex- Sepultura, Soufly), Cory Taylor from Slipknot,  Sandra Nasic from Guano Apes, Nina Hagen, Ville Valo from Him, Lauri Ylonen from The Rasmus, Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil and many more.

What future can bring to Apocalyptica? As huge fan of this amazing Finish band I hope that guys will play for us for many  years. I can’t way to hear tracks from their next album.
