American Idol Season 11: Savannah, Georgia Auditions

The Season 11 auditions for American Idol began in Savannah, Georgia, and as expected there was some serious competition. A few standouts stole the show, but like every American Idol there were also a few crazies that provided plenty of comedic relief.

The premier of American Idol Season 11 lived up to my expectations.  After listening to the judges initial interviews I knew there would be some serious competition.  There were a few standouts, two of which could be serious competition for the grand prize, and of course there were the rejects.  All in all the premier was very entertaining, so here are some of the highlights.

David Leathers Jr. started off the auditions.  He is a 17 year old young man, and the first thing I noticed was that he looked like he was twelve.  David’s claim to fame was singing in a competition with last years American Idol winner Scotty McCreery.  David claimed that he and Scotty took first and second place in the competition.  When he began to sing I really thought I was listening to a young Michael Jackson, his voice was so similar to Micheal’s that the judges actually asked him to sing one of Michael’s songs.  David Leathers Jr. is definitely one of my contenders for the top 10 spots this year.

Now American Idol wouldn’t be American Idol without a few crazies to add a bit of comedy to the show.  Naturally there were some really bad singers, and Jessica Whitely kicked off the show as the first bad audition of the day.  Jessica claimed that she had been singing for many years, and even performed the national anthem a few times in her singing career.  This girl sounded like a cross between Kermit The Frog and Miss Piggy, there was definitely a Muppet like quality to her voice.  The judges gave her an emphatic no, but being as deluded as she was she told them that she would see them again at the Texas auditions.  The judges looked really scared.  Next there was a Ryan Seacrest look alike who spent more time trying to imitate Ryan Searcrest’s voice than he actually sang.  This of course was another no for the judges.  Probably the funniest of the rejects was a man from West Africa by the name Mawuena Kodjo.  Mawuena swore he was going to be the next African country music super star, but the judges could not get passed his heavy West African accent.  Randy of course had to say no in style, so he told Mawuena to find some people to convince the judges to change their mind.  Of course being as determined as Mawuena was he did find a nice family to argue his case, but sadly the judges still said no.
