Aerosmith Breaks Up…. The End of an Institution

Farewell to one of the best ever…

There are great rock bands, and there are legends.  Aerosmith falls easily into the latter category; they rank with the likes of Kiss, Led Zeppelin, and Metallica as not only one of the most influential bands of all time, but one with one ofe the most remarkable stretches of longevity that pop music has ever seen.  They have spanned 4 entire decades, reaching multiple generations and creating what will forever be some of Rock and Roll’s classics.

Apparently the band has been under some strain for quite some time, to the point where lines of communication have failed; enough so that  Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has said that singer Steven Tyler has quit the band “as far as I can tell.”

And so, as Tyler goes his own way, a rock and roll institution ends.  Perry has said the band will continue, we all know how that ends.  They may find someone to step in for Steven Tyler, but replacing an icon, as we’ve seen over and over, never works.

So, as we contemplate the end of a chapter in music history, let us take a look back at some of the classic moments in the history of one of Rock music’s best ever.

Dream On

An epic performance of one of the greatest songs ever made.

Walk This Way

Rap and Rock music have long since integrated themselves into one another; this may be the song that started it all.

Sweet Emotion

Another of the songs that left it’s mark on musical culture.

Amazing

Now known as simply ‘The Trilogy’, the three videos Aerosmith did with actress Alicia Silverstone were huge.  This one, Cryin‘, and Crazy ruled the MTV airwaves for over a year.

Janie’s Got a Gun

One of the best videos the band ever put out.

I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing

Ironically, this was by far the biggest hit of the band’s long and storied career.

Pink

Another huge hit; a throwback to their bluesy background.

Jaded

They become a much more commercially viable band in the later stages of their career; this was a huge success comercially.

What It Takes

Funny how Tyler became something of a cheesy love song crooner, isn’t it?

Like all great rock bands, though, Aerosmith made their reputation with their live performances.  Here are some classics.

Come Together

Some of their younger fans don’t even know this was a Beatles song first.

Toys In The Attic

We sometimes forget the old stuff…

Bring It On Home (With Led Zeppelin)

Aerosmith and Zeppelin.  Enough Said.

Back In The Saddle Again

Another classic.

Great bands never seem to go out the way the should; it always seems like they ought to go out in a blaze of glory, yet they seem all too often to limp out with a whimper.  But with bands like Aerosmith, it doesn’t matter.  When you become the institution after which all others judge, you can go out any damn way you please.

To the ‘Bad Boys From Boston’… thanks for the memories.
