What is it about New York and what is it in a song?

You will be amazed that there are tons of songs about New York (on the title) or anything to do with New York in the lyrics of a song. I have only selected the songs nearest to my heart so I hope you will enjoy it.

The Girl from New York City – Beach Boys

This song was included in The Beach Boy’s  1965 album titled “Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!).

New York Mining Disaster  1941 – Released in 1967, this song was Bee Gees first music released in America and tells about a miner trapped in the tunnel with his colleague. If anybody would notice, the title hasn’t have anything to do with the lyrics, however except for the miner talking to Mr. Jones.

New York, New York – I suppose everyone is familiar with the introductory notes of this song which was a theme song for the movie with the same title released in 1977 performed for the film by Liza Minnelli.

The Boy from New York City – Popularized by the Manhattan Transfer in 1981, this song was first sung by the Ad Libs in 1964 and the Darts in 1978 before becoming a hit for the Manhattan Transfer (Wikipedia).

Arthur’s Theme – The song was performed by Christopher Cross and was originally titled “Best That You Can Do”, this song was popularized as a theme song for the movie “Arthur” starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minelli in 1981.

New York, Rio, Tokyo – Released in 1986, this song was performed by the German band Trio Rio and made it to number 3 in German chart the same year.

Englishman in New York – This song was part of Sting’s album “Nothing like the Sun” released in 1987 which was actually meant to refer to the famous English eccentric Quentin Crisp.

New York Minute – A song written and performed by Don Henley in 1989 for his album “The End of Innocence” and was also included in the reunion performance of the Eagles  titled “Hell Freezes Over” where Don Henley was also a member.

New York – Included in Paloma Faith’s “Do You Want the Truth or Something” album released in September 2009, just a month before Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind, I was actually made to believe both singers were competing for equal share of New York.

Empire State of Mind- Released in October 2009, this was a song by hip hop artist Jay-Z featuring the performance of Alicia Keys singing the part not included in the rap. Later, Alicia revived this song as Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down for her album “The Element of Freedom”.

I hope you enjoyed it.
