Flying is definitely an exhilarating experience the reason why singers and songwriters had been inspired to write songs pertaining to their flight experiences as either a passenger or a pilot. As I had been a self confessed aviation fanatic, I have here 10 songs about airplanes which may rekindle your memories of life and love through time.

Leaving On a Jet Plane (1969) – John Denver

This song definitely immortalizes John Denver who was a certified pilot and later died on a crash of an experimental plane, a  Vari-Eze pusher aircraft designed by Burt Rutan in October  1997. Originally written by Denver I 1966, it had been included in his 1969 album “Rhymes and Reasons”.

Refrain – Jose Mari Chan

This was one of my favorites by Chinese-Filipino singer Jose Mari Chan which details I have difficulty obtaining online. My estimate is this song had been released in the 70s but still never out of time.

Happy Hawaii (1977)– ABBA

An ABBA’s single released in 1977 alongside with “Knowing Me, Knowing You” and tells about their  holiday trip to Hawaii aboard a plane through Honolulu. The sound of the waves at the intro makes it more like a soothing music to relax.

Jet Airliner (1977) – Steve Miller Band

This song was released as part of Steve Miller’s “Book of Dreams” album. It was also concurrently released as a single and reached # 8 on the Billboard Chart.

Enola Gay (1980) – OMD

Released as part of OMDs “Organisation” album in 1980, it made to number 8 on the UK Chart. For a refresher “Enola Gay” was the name of the B-29 Superfortress that dropped the bomb in Hiroshima, Japan to signal the ultimatum for the end of World War II.

20 Minutes Before Take Off (1980) – Dan Henry

This song was performed by Danny Samonte and Henry Toribio, both Filipinos. The song was popular in the Philippines and still is. I never thought this was actually a local song there (itweb).

Aces High (1984) –Iron Maiden

This song was released as Iron Maiden’s eleventh single in 1984 and made it to # 20 on the UK Singles Chart. This song was also featured as soundtrack in “Madden 2010” video game.

Danger Zone (1986) – Kenny Loggins

Originally released as part of the Top Gun movie soundtrack, this song was an electrifying music detailing the experience of being on a fighter jet getting that adrenaline rush.

Jet Airliner (1987) – Modern Talking

Part of Modern Talking’s 5th album “Romantic Warriors”. This song peaked to # 7 in Germany on the same year. Despite sharing the same title with the song by Steve Miller Band, this was a completely different song.

Aeroplane (1993)– Bjork

This song was released in 1993 as part of Bjork’s “Debut” album. Bjork is an Icelandic singer-songwriter.
