Gimme Somethin’: New Music Lovers or Music and Lovers

The Britney effect. What today’s musicians have contributed.

Dude Where’s My Music?

Have you ever noticed how much musicians get paid in modern day society as opposed to how things used to be? My grandparents were just talking about music the other day, and it really is true, things really have changed. People could really, really sing back then, and some can now too, but because of contracts and all the odd little technicalities, back then they rarely got paid anything close to scale (that is parallel) to what musicians get paid now. That was the whole reason why Prince went through that whole ‘slave’ thing and turned himself into a symbol remember, because he was upset with his ripoff contract. But I would just like to take a moment to reflect back on those times where musicians were lesser gods and say thank you.

Can you imagine if musicians had started out with salaries parallel to say Britney Spears’ in their times. Wow music would suck! Kind of like it does today; can Britney Spears really sing? Yet, we call her a singer. And look how much she gets paid for making sex. Because that’s basically what she does. She doesn’t sing. And for the big time money she makes, she should have the female equivalent of Michael Jacksonesque moves, so let’s face it, she doesn’t really dance either. And you know this is true, because, after how far she fell; I don’t even dislike the girl. So she must really suck. And she does. And that’s how music in general pretty much is these days, sucky. We call them singers, but nobody really sings.

We call them musicians, but a lot of them don’t really even make music. You could use the background effects from a video game for an instant song and be famous. Now music is either sex, or sensationalism. I want someone to create happy, crazy, out there music, that makes me feel good. But I don’t want to listen to oldies; I’m not dead, even though it‘s good stuff. I’m alive and young and I want something better. That’s why I feel we need to look to music in the past because I believe that there’s at least a basis for musicians now to build from.

That’s also why I’m thanking the old musicians now though, because if they hadn’t started out modest and actually had been paid in parallel to musicians’ salaries now, we wouldn’t have even the base for good music.

It’s kind of like teaching. They say the reason why regular teachers aren’t paid as highly as NBA players, though their services are obviously more valuable (no offense to the NBA or anything, you help give back too, but without the teachers to donate it to, what would it mean), is because if teachers got paid as highly as NBA players people would start teaching just for the money and our education system would go down the drain. It’s the same with music.

Since making it in music was actually more about talent and a little less about money, back then you actually had to be talented to be a musician. They had live bands and live music almost all the time and because there was little to no computer enhancements, peoples voices actually sounded the way they did in their songs, contrary to now with all of the voice enhancing. So now we have real music. Thank you musicians of the past. Now let’s everyone be smart and start getting with the concept! Let’s make some real music!
