Self-Taught Singing

Anyone can improve their singing for free. That’s how I added about four more octaves to my range.

If, as I did, you feel embarassed when people ask you to sing, because you dislike your singing voice, there is a solution.  You really can improve your singing without any cost.  You don’t even have to go out of your house, or do it for long at a time.

All you have to do is work out which singer has a similar voice to you.  If you don’t know yourself, ask a tactful friend.  Go for someone who has a slightly bigger vocal range than you.  Then put your favourite songs of theirs on your music player, and play them whenever you have a spare moment.  Just listen the first few times, then try to sing along once you’re fairly sure of the words and timing.  Try to match your pitch and timing with the singer’s, even if it is a little hard at first.

Once you, or a tactful friend, feel that you can easily sing as well as your chosen person, it’s time to move on.  Listen to a range of different music, and decide whom you would most like to sing like.  Then listen to their stuff, and sing along when you feel ready.  And that’s all there is to it.  You don’t need to choose a singer of the same gender, I chose a male singer both times.
