You see it day in and day out. New artists produce music and just put it out without a second guess about registering their music for copyrights.  Take a look into this article where I give some reasons on why you would like to own the copyrights to your music.

As a rule of thumb, as excited as you are about it, never play of distribute your new music till you get it copy written and or registered.  Your music can get stolen so watch out.  Now even though technically your song is copy written the moment its recorded, you will still need proof that it belongs to you.  That’s why registering your music is very important.  Learn this now so it becomes habit.  These are a few but not limited to  the many reasons you should be copyrighting your music.

To Sell and Distribute Your Music-

As an artist or musician we sell the fruits of our labor which are in the form of production and songs.  Holding copyright enables you to sell and distribute your music globally while still owning exclusive rights of the music.  In this day and time you need to be copyrighting your music.  There are many that would rather steal your ideas instead of use what talents and gifts they have.

To Create An Asset for Your Company-

Owning the exclusive rights to a hit song can bring in revenue for years to come to any record label.  You can look at owning the exclusive rights to a hit song as an asset.  Your whole catalog of music is an asset, saying that it is original content that will never be duplicated.  Having assets can bring you more leverage when making new deals.  Your catalog is like owning land and real estate because art appreciates with time.

Copyrights Can be Passed Down_

Even after an artist dies their copyrights can live on.  A copyright depending on where it was issued can go from 50 to well over 70 years.  Since they are looked at as assets they can be traded, sold, or passed down to future generations by family.
