Mac Miller – Taking Over the World

What is all the hype surrounding Mac Miller you ask, is it Miller time? It probably is. When I first heard Mac Miller it brought me back to why I loved Hip Hop so much. Listening to this MC helps me remember as a youth on why I was so inspired to start rhyming myself. The days rolling through downtown, listening cats drop witty word play, killa metaphors, while blazin’ an L on the cruise for girls. Those were the days. Let me introduce you to one of the best up incoming MC’s in the game, MacMiller from the Steel City Pittsburg, PA.

MacMiller was born on January 19, 1992 in the Point Breeze part of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In his freshman year at Taylor Allderdice High School, Miller decided to focus on his hip-hop career, later noting, “Once I hit 15, I got real serious about it and it changed my life completely… I used to be into sports, play all the sports, and go to all the high school parties. But once I found out hip-hop is almost like a job, that’s all I did.” Before his solo career, he was part of a rap group, The Ill Spoken with fellow Pittsburgh rapper, Beedie. Upon turning 18, Miller signed with Rostrum Records and released his mix tape debut, titled K.I.D.S. with the label in August 2010.Miller includes Big L, Lauryn Hill, The Beastie Boys, Outkast, and A Tribe Called Quest among his influences. When I seen Big L, I knew this kid knew what it was all about in the rap game.

One of his tracks is Donald Trump, “And muthafuckas think they know me but they never met the kids, Style come with excellence and money make benevolence, Irrelevant for the fuckers who never been intelligent, I kill my Henny, break the bottle for the hell of it”. Or how about on the track 5 O’clock, “Somebody told me sleep was a cousin to death, and following a dollar finds nothing but stress, But I’m going hard ’till there’s nothing left under my chest”. “You see ‘dat I’mma need a recap ,Grab a weed sack cheap that ’till my feet flat, I got this covered like a pro bowl d-back, Breathe rap been a been known to make the b-clip, Need cash so I’m tryin’ to move some trees fast, Tell you where to meet at, Ask you where the cheese at”.

This is not an MC that is rhyming about big wheels and glocks and nines he is rapping about letting the game come naturally because this is what he is suppose to be doing. MacMiler is about enjoying life, smoking an L or 2, staying true to self and reminding us that life is not about living to work but enjoying life to the fullest. This young MC is only 19 years of age but where he is mentally is another story. His main influences are by some of the great lyricists of my generation and I consider myself Old school. You notice most of the young MC’s these days are inspired by their generation of MC’s, that is not a bad thing but when I see a young head have inspirations by Blacked Eyed Peas compared to Tribe or Kanye West compared to Big L, you best believe the MC that is inspired by Tribe & L will always catch my attention over the others. It is not because I am Old School, just listen for yourself.  MacMiller is not one of the next best things; he is the next best thing.
