How to write an R&B Track starting from the beginning how to choose a topic.
Rhythm and Blues known as R&B varies artist from artist voice from voice. It is about uniqueness, expressing yourself because no one is like you. Telling your story because yours has a different twist, its being bold R&B is saying what others are afraid to say but is probably in total agreement. Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way. You have to bring all of these thoughts to the table when you begin to write an R&B song. The best way is to let it come out naturally write down things that you have the most experience in doing, write about situations or stories you are familiar with. Even if you are a singer and you have someone else that writes your material they should be using your stories your familiarities.
This is due to the fact that using your own feelings promotes better singer. If someone writes for you and the song is about homosexual activities and the singer doesn’t swing that way it would probably not turn out as good as the singing about being in love and married for 15 years something should could relate to, for example. Sense R&B is about emotion it is best that the singer sings what they are passionate about the topic; the topic determines the best voice for the track. Now that you have your topic and voice in your head you want to relax and let it all come to you. Now I will say this when writing an R&B track if you do not compose music it is probably best to write to a specific beat you have purchased or found capable to use as a demo.
If you do compose I recommend writing while you compose the beat this will increase the potential of the beat as well as the lyrics to the song. Everything will be on point and should flow together nice and smooth and that’s the type of feel you want on an R&B track. If you are writing to a beat that’s already made that you didn’t compose you have listen find the words. Every beat will speak for itself as a lyricist you must be able to dig deep and find the words to match up with the beat. This is why I say if you can compose write while you compose because you would be creating both at the same time so your flow should be nearly perfect perhaps perfect without editing, which is the next step. So you relaxed you let your story come out and you think that you’ve got a smash hit. Well you have to go over and edit when writing you should have let it flow naturally and tried not to keep your pen off the page. So now you will be editing/ polishing up.
You want to give your lyrics a rhythm hence the name Rhythm and Blues you are supposed to tell a story of some sort and have rhythm throughout. Now the rhythm shouldn’t stay the exact same way the whole song you definitely want to change it up a little bit without disturbing the entire rhythm of the song this is usually done with Bridges. Which I will explain in Part 2 of how to write an R&B track. I will also explain how you want to set up the entire song and give some tips on how to edit after jotting all your thoughts down.
