Fugazi Biography

Fugazi is a group of post-hardcore band from Washington, DC, formed in 1987.

The band’s name is directly derived from the abbreviation used by the IM in the Vietnam War, when they were in very bad shape – literally: “Fucked Up, Got Ambushed, Zipped In”, “Am fucked , ambushed, can not go outside.
Fugazi is one of the few examples of groups that managed to be well known, while remaining loyal to independent recording labels and distribution, in the spirit of the DIY ethic of punk. The group has rarely pay more than 5 or U.S. $ 10 entry of his concerts in the United States and has always wanted to be open to all ages. MacKaye was, in particular, who insisted on this point, remembering to have been rejected from clubs during his adolescence. Fugazi has also always kept the price of his albums around U.S. $ 10 and has never sold products such as t-shirts or posters.

All the band’s albums were released on Dischord Records co-managed by Ian MacKaye and Minor Threat drummer Jeff Nelson.

Group History

After the short-lived and influential hardcore band Minor Threat dissolved, Ian MacKaye (vocals and guitar) was active in several groups at the short life (including emo band Embrace) before forming a new trio with drummer Brendan Canty of Rites of Spring and bassist Joe Lally. In 1988 released their first EP, Fugazi, which contains several songs popular with fans, including “Waiting Room”.

The group was joined by Guy Picciotto, another former of Rites of Spring. Initially, Picciotto sang only but soon he started playing guitar in the quartet.

Fugazi has developed an experimental sound, unique, which later influenced the punk rock and grunge. He married elements of noise music with a syncopated original while spicing the opportunity to reggae and dub influences. Furthermore, in their experimentation, imagination outstanding MacKaye and Picciotto, the timing of their guitars, often rendered obsolete the traditional concept of lead guitar and rhythm guitar. They also incorporated in their melodies, chords and progressions and unusual musical strangely dissonant, sometimes reminiscent of the musical harmony of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd of Television Group, filtered through a hardcore sensibility.

Ordinarily, the words of MacKaye are more direct, and sound like hymns, with slogans and jingles very marked. These are more abstract de Picciotto, with a more oblique approach. Lally also participated in writing some songs. The lyrics Fugazi have the particularity of place strong emphasis on the emotions. This style has led critics to call this music post-hardcore or emo, as it is perceived as a progression and a reaction from the hardcore.

Fugazi’s career has been recounted in Our Band Could Be Your Life, an essay on the American undergrounds groups. The Book of Mark Anderson and Mark Jenkins Dance of Days: Two Decades of Punk in the Nation’s Capital, also deals in length, and the career of each member of the group.

The group is currently a “pause” in part because Canty and Lally have become fathers, and still no certainty to meet again one day. However, Fugazi has recently released via the website www.fugaziliveseries.com, twenty non-mixed videos. Meanwhile, members involved in participating in other projects: MacKaye plays in a duo called The Evens with Amy Farina of the group Warmers, Canty creates different soundtracks and plays bass in the trio Garland Of Hours.
