Very simple, but useful way to improve your compositions made with Reason.
What do you do first when you create a new document in Reason? The first thing you should do is to turn off “Mastering” combinator (put the switcher to “bypass”), the second device on new document. By doing this, you’ll be sure, about sound from other devices. This combinator has a compressor and limiter – those two are cutting the master sound to 0 dB, so you can not know – is your peak meter going up too high or not.
Reason has a little indicator to inform you about audio clipping. It is located on the very bottom left corner, named as “Audio out clip”. If it turns red – you should try adjusting mixer better. This indicator is pointless, if you’re not bypassing the “Mastering” combinator, because, if you’re not, “Audio out clip” wont ever light up.
I suggest you to put the “Mastering” combinator on, only when you’re finishing the composition. Then you can adjust your master level, master equalizer, limiter and compressor if you need.
If you do this, you’ll always be sure about your composition’s master level. And of course, finished composition will be more professional.
Good luck!
