Mp3: The Music Evolution Takes Over

My preference is for digital files.

The mp3 format has taken over the music business, surpassing CD sales, which have dropped 14 percent this year, according to Neilson SoundScan, which tracks music sales through the U.S. and Canada.

Neilson also reported that 36 percent of American record stores have closed their doors since 2003, including Tower Records. This fall saw one of the worst CD sales from indie rock to hip hop in SoundScan’s history.

After years of explosive growth with mp3, big retail giants have also cut back floor space devoted to CD’s, pushing them off the shelves to make room for other entertainment, such as video games.

Some prefer to have the actual album in their hands, to have something solid and to look at the artwork, lyrics, and liner notes in the booklet.

Others prefer the convenience that digital files bring. Digital files have made it easier for people to purchase music. Online stores like iTunes and eMusic sell songs for as little as $0.99.
