Want to Start Your Own Band?

Okay, you want to start your own band. Your first step should be to take your instrument into your room and practice, practice, practice. When you feel you are ready, go to your local music store or gathering place where musicians hang out and talk to people. Connect with people you might want to play with and with people who can clue you into rehearsal spaces. Get acquainted, be friendly and learn where they play and their connections. Look for musicians wanted on bulletin boards and classified ads.

Let your interests be known. Go to live shows. Pick out a local band and follow it. Chat with everyone at shows, music stores and instrument shops. Getting your name out there is the name of the game. Find some band mates. If you want to start with a ready made band, find a band in the classifieds,a music store bulletin board or on a community website. Be prepared when you go for an audition.

If you’d rather start your own band, post your ads and set up auditions. Place an ad in your local paper, on bulletin boards at music stores or anywhere musicians hang out. Be prepared for some characters. Maybe you shouldn’t put your real name in the ad. You might want to be able to hide from some of the odd balls.

Talk to people every where you go about what you are trying to do. You might meet good connections at the most unexpected places. Once you have your band members lined up have a good place lined up for practice. If you have a basement or garage, that’s perfect. If not, you might have to hire a place for practice. Look in the ads, you might find a place to share with other bands and save on rent.

Now that you are all set, practice at least twice a week until you have kick-but thirty minute music you can play in your sleep. When you have that perfect thirty minutes, it’s time to record it so you can demonstrate your stuff to club bookers, party bookers, radio stations, and maybe even record companies. Anyone with basic recording equipment can help you do this. Ask fellow musicians how they made their demo tape or what local studios offer this service.

Once you have a master you like, burn fifty copies on CD and don’t give them to friends. Instead, pull together a promotional package and create some cool cover art for the CD sleeve. Take a photo of the band, be sure it relates to you and the music.

Ask all your friends to help you get your first gig. Play anywhere and everywhere, clubs, parties, fund raisers, you name it. Don’t turn anything down. Watch the classifieds and bulletin boards. You won’t get paid a lot but the experience and becoming know as a kick-butt band is the payoff.
