A profile of the amazingly talented singer, Lelia Broussard.
I am a huge music fan and the other night, when I couldn’t sleep I found myself trawling through myspace, looking at unsigned, up and coming singers and bands. I was amazed at what I found. There are so many incerdibly talented musicians out there, just waiting to be discovered. I decided to write about some of the best I found, starting with the talented Lelia Broussard.
Her myspace page describes her as ‘acoustic, indie, melodramatic pop, but Lelia is not as eay to pigeon hole as that. Her vocal range is wide and fits perfectly with genres as diverse as jazz, pop, rock, R n b and even rap. She is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
She was born and raised in Lafayette in South Louisiana, but has since lived in Iowa, Philadelphia, New York and currently LA. She has spent her time releasing CDs as an independent artist and gigging, and in November 2007, she signed a publishing deal with Rondo/Universal Music Group.
Waiting on the Nine
Her debut EP ‘Louisiana Soul’ was written and recorded when she was an impressively young fifteen years old. Her second project (Lil-yah) was re-released in 2007 under the name Rise. A new 6 song EP ‘Waiting on the 9′ is now available on myspace.com.
Hipster Bitch
Her music is already in demand. The title track of her album ‘Rise’ was picked up by MTV hit show ‘The Hills’, while two of her songs ‘Secrets’ and ‘Should have Known’ appeared on the popular teen drama ‘Joan of Arcadia’.
Add to that, the fact that she recently completed national tour of TGI Friday/Walmarts along with several major label artists, and I think you will be earing a lot more from Lelia in the future.
What are your plans for the future? Are you planning any more tours/are you working on any new material? I just want to do as much as humanly possible to get my music heard by everyone, I want everyone to hear my record, and see me play. This year is going to be about touring a lot and focusing on getting more songs on Film and Television. I’m going out to the east coast in March for a few shows and I’m doing a west coast tour in April/May with Jay Nash and Joey Ryan. So that should be a blast.
What inspired you to get into music? I can’t remember a time in my life where I wasn’t inspired to get into music. I’ve pretty much always known this is what I NEED to do. Wanting or hoping to get into music was never even a question it’s just always been my life.
Where do you get the inspiration for your songs? It can come from anything really. People, places, things. All of my songs are very personal to me so it usually comes from something going on in my life at the time.
Have you a message for your fans or anyone listening to your music for the first time? Just thank you for listening, for your support, and I hope that this music means something to you.
Why is music your passion? What do you love most about singing? Because music is such a part of peoples lives. In every way. For every emotion and part of your life there is a song. When you sing you bare your soul..and besides that it’s just plain fun. I love playing music and I can’t imagine having a better job.
Lelia’s new EP ‘Waiting on the 9′ is available now on her myspace page.
