A review of Shankar Mahadevan’s wonderful concert at Hyderabad.

The day just commenced with the fear of the last exam tension. Though complacency crept through I was geared up for a boring day unless in the hope that something literally strikes me. And something really did… In the form of an Idea given by a puny little junior of mine. Ever heard of being breathless? Ever tried it involuntarily? Ever danced or shouted the night through breathlessness? Ever heard of ‘BREATHLESS NIGHTS’?

Shankar Mahadevan the amazing talent from the south had this one concert named ‘Breathless Nights’ that got the whole of Hyderabad dancing and breathless! Dated today (22/11/2008), the concert which was conducted at the Railway Reservation Complex Hockey Stadium rocked the High-derabadis! The atmosphere was such a boost to the singing! Shankar was just unbelievable as he sang 15 most scintillating songs in an amazing show of voice modulation and consistency. He got the crowd so pepped up and singing that he had a chorus of hundreds as he enjoyed a period of interactive singing with songs like ‘Pichle Saath Dino Mein’ and ‘Dil Chahta Hain’. Mitwa was the performance of the night with splendid innovation and classical perfection from the singer. The mood of the crowd was getting zanier when Shankar surprised the audience with a fake saying he would be singing a sad elegy but suddenly kicked in with ‘Mast Kalandar’ and then got the crowd into madness with a consecution of ‘Desi Girl’ and ‘Move your Body’ which were requested for a ONCE MORE PLEASE and he so sweetly obliged. The voices went shrill as people danced, rejoiced and whistled their way past others. The security was thick though the crowd got erratic with swinging shirts, chilled beer and dancing on chairs. The show which started at 7: 30 played all foot-tapping numbers till the arrival of the Singing Maestro. The crowd got into hip swinging once Shankar introduced the promising Anusha who made the show rock further with ‘Beedi’ and ‘Aaj Ki Raat’ and great chorus to the other songs. Hard Kaur was missed a bit in the ‘Move your body’ performance but Anusha didn’t do bad either. Then came another surprise talent in the form of Raman who gripped the crowd tight with two melodies. The gals and guys danced in perfect harmony on stage.

Overall Shankar stole the show and was the pick of the entire clique. With the multiple twists in this little more than an hour show, He mesmerized the crowd with his energy and lively interaction. He got the crowd stunned when he wanted all lights off and all cell-phones on for ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’! This was one of the defining moments of the overall spectacular show. The crowd went crazy many a time with the bundle of surprises that Shankar had in store for them, There was a period of mesmerizing singing when he sang the Telugu Song ‘Bam Bam Bole’ (Movie: Indra) and merged it into the ‘Bum Bum Bole’(Originally Sung by Shaan) of Taare Zameen Par. There was another masterpiece from him when he went on talking instruments and the talented band played back all the notes that he sand. It was a kind of a fusion Jugalbandhi and got the spectators spellbound for a span. What a show and what a way to present it! Kudos to Shankar Mahadevan and other singers, Railways Reservation Complex Authorities, The security forces and the lovely, lively crowd that accompanied all along.

The songs that were sung were:

1. Jhoom Barabar Jhoom
2. Dil Chahta Hai
3. Pretty Woman
4. Bam Bam Bole to Bum Bum bole :)
5. Kodithe Kottali(Tagore)
6. Pichle Saath Dino Mein( Raman)
7. Rock on!
8. Maa
9. Desi Girl
10. Move your body
11. Yeh Mera Dil and Beedi (By Anusha)
12. Mitwa
