Why Do I Prefer Fingerstyle?

There several styles for guitarists to play in. Some of these included fingerstyle and the common strum-and-sing style. This article talks about why do I like playing fingerstyle.

Fingerstyle guitar is the technique of playing the guitar by plucking the strings directly with the fingertips, fingernails, or picks attached to fingers, such as thumbpicks and fingerpicks. There are several types of thumbpicks and fingerpicks that are specially made for fingerstyle guitarists and many of them are rather affordable.

Firstly, I like playing fingerstyle because it allows me to play both the melody, bass and percussion with a single guitar, compared to the strumming and singing style which requires vocalists to sing along to the tune. Also, it is possible to play non-adjacent strings together at the same time, which is important for playing both the bass and melody simultaneously.

Secondly, I feel that I can express myself easily with fingerstyle. One quote which I like to recite to myself is : Music is a universal language, not the lyrics. And personally I agree to it to a certain extent and that one can express their thoughts and emotions more freely with fingerstyle compared to other styles of playing the guitar, regardless of the fact that fingerstyle is generally more difficult to get the hang of and requires more coordination compared to other techniques, especially when trying to add percussion to the piece.

For guitarists who are interested to learn fingerstyle, I’m sure there are plenty of websites out there that will give plenty of tips for beginner fingerstyle guitarists. You should also check out Sungha Jung’s videos on Youtube, his playing of the guitar is simply inspiring and unique. I hope that his videos will help motivate you to carry on with fingerstyle and inspire you to work even harder with your songs!!
