I apologise in advance for any spelling or grammatical errors, as Michael Kiwanuka’s debut album, Home Again, has made me fall half-asleep. No, it’s not down to boredom, not at all! Rather, the London soul musician’s rough yet reassuring voice is such that one can’t help but want to relax a bit.

It must have been a bit of a shock to see this man topping the BBC’s Sound Of 2012 Poll, no? It’s not every day that a sound that combines folk with soul ends up being a major hit (Adele being, uh, the exception that proves the rule), but Kiwanuka’s been getting a shedload of press this past week, and for good reason, because Home Again is pretty excellent!

No matter how amazing they sound, it’s not all about the incredibly unique but also the instrumentation behind it. Expect warm, acoustic guitar playing throughout with the odd jazz flute thrown in. The lyrics are varied enough, ranging from the joys of returning home (have a guess as to what that song’s name is) to experiencing ‘puppy love’.

Overall it’s a solid album, and while there’s nothing hugely memorable about it besides Michael Kiwanuka’s incredible voice, it’s still worth listening to after a long day’s work.
