Some tips about where to start when learning guitar.

The main thing that stopped me from learning guitar at first was the effort I would have to put in to be good. The thing was, there was something else that scared me even more than the effort and that was knowing I was always going to regret not learning the guitar. Thankfully I did……

Ok so the most frustrating thing about learning guitar is the beginning, when you don’t know where to start.

Some tips on where to start learning –

  1. Getting an instructor is a common starting point, but it’s not for everyone. Instructors can be expensive and some players may want to make it on there own, this is good because it is so satisfying to of learned something all by yourself, the success is all yours.
  2. Listening to the guitar being played in all your favourite songs can be a great way to learn to play by ear, this is a very hard thing to do and only experienced guitar players can do it, but it’s always great to start early.
  3. Learning your favourite songs is good practice for getting to know your guitar. Do this by searching for things called Tabs for example (Blink 182 All The Small Things Tabs) this is easy to read music, try to incorporate listening to the song with learning the tab.
  4. Once you have gotten to know your guitar, this is the best time to start learning chords. The best chords to learn would be the basic chords , these are A, B, C, D, E, F, G. Try to find some good songs which you like that use these chords and watch the players LIVE to get a good indication of how its done.
  5. Scales are the base of all guitar riffs, but when looking at them they don’t seem much. The best way to approach scales is to learn one off by heart and then fiddle around with the arrangement of the notes, you will find yourself eventually making some really cool tunes out of one scale, unfortunately there are hundreds….get practicing.
  6. Learn from example. Watch some of your favourite guitar players and what techniques they use while playing. You will find that the more you play the more you will discover as it is a long road and there is a lot to learn.

Guitar is a hard thing to learn, as is every instrument, but it is not expected of you to learn to play the guitar in a couple of months not even a year or two. Most guitar players START to play well after a year or two and this still is only the beginning. So don’t get discouraged and impatient, as of most things worth doing, take time and effort.
