A free online guitar tuner is something that, in truth, you would actually pay for if you saw what it offered and the benefits it gives the modern guitarist in terms of learning pitch and opening new avenues of sound. Marvellous!!
There isn’t much in life that is free, but for guitar players there is something that is actually worthwhile and extremely useful. You own free online guitar tuner is available that will provide you with over sixty different tunings so you will be able to create new sounding songs and sounds.
I have been using this particular free guitar tuner for a while and I have to say that it not only has more tunings than you can shake a stick at, but it has also started to train my ear to the pitch of the notes. This was actually an unexpected bi-product of the guitar tuner, but a most welcome on. The ear pitch training has, in some ways, been better than the tunings themselves.
Whilst at the moment I would not be brave enough to stand up on stage without the use of a digital tuner to tune my acoustic guitar, I reckon I could have a pretty good stab at it. The good thing about learning these alternative tunings is also that you will learn different notes than the standard E A D G B e.
The free online guitar tuner I use covers all the usual alternative tunings that you would come across such as the dropped note tunings and open tunings, but there are also some pretty unusual ones. By experimenting with some of these it can lead you into some relatively unchartered territory. For instance the ‘Cooder’ tuning, I am assuming that this is used extensively by the great Ry Cooder comprises of the following Db Ab Db F Ab Db… Interesting sound and the strings are a little looser than those you would normally play with!!
Some of the tunings are lower like the one above, whilst others are just plain odd, like ‘Iris’ (from the Goo Goo Dolls song) which is B D D D D d, give that one a try and see if you can make your own song out of it.
A word of warning is that you really need to be careful with some of the tunings that take the high e string even higher. There is a point when these snap and believe me when they go, they go.
The free online tuner provides other features such as delay on the note so that you have longer in between to get your ear and the guitar string sounding the same. No one wants to be rushed unless they have to be!! To help with this is the auto advance or manual advance feature. The auto feature will obviously be used in conjunction with the delay knob. I always set the tuner to be on the guitar sound as opposed to the tone. The guitar sound is actually very realistic and that is what has really helped me to train my ear to the pitch.
In summary, the free online guitar tuner that is available is as good as anything you would pay for that does not actually plug into the guitar. To be honest, even if you didn’t feel comfortable enough in the beginning to use it, you could simply get all the great tunings and experiment with them yourself and use a chromatic or digital tuner to get your guitar sounding right. Give it a try, I don’t know anyone who has regretted it… it is free!!
