Before you buy a guitar you need to know what kind of guitar you want to play. Do you prefer the soft sound of a classical acoustic or the more melodic sounds of the Mexican acoustic?

When you look at a guitar what do you see? Do you just see something that makes sound or do you see an ancient instrument with tuners and frets and strings? Do you see notes and chords? Do you see rests and beats? Do you want the type of guitar designed first or did you know that there are different types of guitars? If you are wondering what some of this means but it sounds interesting then perhaps you should get a guitar and take lessons.

Before you buy a guitar you need to know what kind of guitar you want to play. Do you prefer the soft sound of a classical acoustic or the more melodic sounds of the Mexican acoustic? Do you want to hear the metallic twang of a steel guitar or the country/rock sounds of a slide guitar? Do you want an electric or an acoustic? Do you want four, five, six, or twelve strings? Would you like to learn a four of five string bass? Do you want a dual neck, double tuned twelve string electric with a kicker and distortion knobs or would you prefer the harmonious balance of the single neck twelve string acoustic with one set of strings an octave higher? These are the simple questions, because once you know these than you have to start looking at the specifics.

What type of wood do you want to use? Alder, Maple, Walnut, Mahogany, the type of wood that the guitar is made out of makes almost as much difference as the type of guitar. Different woods create different sounds. That is why it is more popular to make a certain type of guitar out of a select group of woods, but since the body is not the only thing that affects the sound, you can make the body out of almost any type of wood and compensate with the other characteristics for the exact sound you want. It makes a difference as to whether your neck is separate from the body or one uniform piece. The bridge, nut, saddle, pickups, sound holed, strings and the shape of the body all play a part in what the guitar sounds like.

The guitar is a wonderful instrument with a beautiful sound. Once you own one, if you’re smart, you’ll treat it like a baby and in return it will bring music to your ears and a dance to the feet of all those around you.
