An easy instruction for the beginner or amateur on how to tune your guitar + some very useful tips.

Guitar tuning – overview

There’s several guides out there describing how to tune your guitar. It’s not rocket science tuning guitars, but it can be both frustrating and confusing to get a decent tuning out of some of the on line guides as a beginner. As a beginner, probably with a new guitar, the strings will quickly go out of tune so you have to know at least the basics. You will therefore need to learn the basics. This guide will explain it visual, step by step, to hopefully help get a better tuning.

There are two good,  totally free ways of tuning your guitar:

  • Traditional style
Comparing the strings, one by one
  • With your computer
Using free software or on line tuners

Traditional style

If you quickly need to do a rough tuning this tuning is fast and easy. With some practise you will soon learn to hear the difference for a more precise tuning. You really should try to learn this method decently.

For a start you need to get the E-string (thickest string) sounding something like a E-tone. You can get a reference tone with on line tuners (described later), with a piano, another guitar, and so on. If you’re playing by yourself it won’t have to be a perfect tuned E. The important thing is that the strings match each other. So, with a decent tuned E-string:

Hold the down the E-string (heaviest string) on the 5th fret. This will make the E-string a A. Tune your A-string to sound like E-string on 5th fret. These two strings are now tuned.

Next up is the D-string. Now hold down your A-string on the 5th fret. This will make it a D. Tune your D as the A string on 5th fret. Now you’re halfway.

Lets tune the G-string. In the same way as for the E, A and D-string. Hold down the D-string on the 5th fret, that makes it a G, and tune the G-string correctly.

As you can see, E,A,D and G follows the same pattern – upper string 5th fret. The B-string will differ from this pattern though. You hold down the G-string on 4th fret to make it a B. So, tune the B-string to sound like the G-string on 4th fret.
