Just a bit about the cello.

THE CELLO

The cello is a strings instrument that was invented by Amati of Cremos during the 1500’s.It is used as a solo instrument, in chamber music.

A cello looks very similar to the guitar but there are some different. A cello’s four strings, from lowest to highest, are tuned C, G, D and A. It is tuned in fifths. A guitar, however, four strings, from lowest to highest are tuned E, A, D and G. It is tuned in fourths.

The cello is usually played while seated. Its weight is supported mainly by its endpin or spike, which rests on the floor. Sometimes, an endpin support is needed to prevent the endpin from slipping on smooth surfaces. The cello is steadied on the lower bout between the knees of the seated player, and on the upper bout against the upper chest. The neck of the cello is above the player’s left shoulder, and the C-String tuning peg is just behind the left ear.

The bow is consists of a string which stretches to connect at both ends. It is stroked horizontally across the cello to produce sound.

Cellos come in a variety of sizes to suit the size of the player.
