A simple explanation about basic drum types, and different set-ups for all styles.
When selecting a drumset, you should first decide what kind of music you will be playing. For jazz, smaller size drums are suggested; for rock, the larger the better. A basic jazz setup would be a 18 to 20 inch bass drum, a 14 by 5 to 5.5 inch snare, a 10 or 12 inch rack tom, and a 14 inch floor tom. For rock, a basic setup would include a 22 to 24 inch bass drum, a 12 or 13 inch rack tom, a 16 inch floor tom, and a deep snare drum (6 or more inches deep). Generally, deep drums will produce a louder tone, but this is not always true. I hope this has helped you to select your first drum set.
