While working on the Ironhead Sportster clutch it helps to kow all the parts one is made out of. This Ironhead clutch release mechanism figure shows the parts that are used to release the clutch plates and how the clutch cable works with the primary chain cover.

The clutch release mechanism figure above shows which parts under the primary chain cover work to release the clutch plates. It also lets one know how it all works with the primary chain cover. The figure is broken down to three pieces.

 The Ironhead clutch release mechanism upper left small picture shows the clutch control coil, the clutch control cable locknut and the clutch control coil adjuster. It shows how the clutch control cable gets adjusted on top of the primary chain cover.

The Ironhead clutch release mechanism figure upper center small picture shows the hand lever, anchor pin and control cable ferrule. It says slot open end must face toward inside of lever. That tells how one end of the clutch control cable gets put into the clutch hand lever.

The Ironhead clutch release mechanism figure upper right small picture looks into the clutch adjusting hole of the primary chain cover. It shows the clutch adjusting screw locknut and the clutch adjusting screw.

The Ironhead clutch release mechanism figure center shows the primary chain cover and the Ironhead clutch release parts under it. All the parts are numbered so an Ironhead Sportster rider can easily get the right replacement part when necessary. Starting at the lower left of the primary chain cover is part number 1, working inward then part 2, then part 3, then part 4, then part 5, then part 6 and then at the bottom of the primary chain cover part 18. Starting from the right on the inside of the primary chain cover is part number 7. Then working outward to the left is part 8, then below that part 11, then above that part 12, then below that part 9, then part 10. Then at the upper left of the primary chain cover is part number 12, then working down to the right is part 15, then part 13 and  then part 15. At the top of the primary chain cover is 16 the primary chain cover name and part 17.

The Ironhead clutch release mechanism figure bottom holds a numbered part name list broken into two pieces.  The one on the left holds 1. Access plug, then 2, O-ring, then 3. Locknut, then 4 Lockwasher, then 5. Adjusting screw, then 6. Retaining ring, then 7. Release ramp and lever, then 8 Ball (3)and  then 9. Release ramp. The one on the right starts with 10. Washer, then 11 Cable coupling, then 12 Cable and coil assy,  then 13. Locknut, then 14. Washer, then 15 Adjusting sleeve, then 16. Primary chain case cover, then 17. Plug and then 18 Oil level screw.
