A Thrilling Experience

My first DSO Civic Youth Ensamble Wind Sympony Concert.

For a little background information, last June I auditioned for Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Civic youth ensembles.  CYE for short.  I got the audition for their Wind Symphony and we started rehearsals the beginning of the school year. All of sudden, it was the week of the concert.

We were supposed to come to Orchestra hall and play.  Our call was at seven in the lower level dressing rooms.  One problem, where are the dressing rooms?  As I’m freaking out I realize there are signs pointing to where the dressing rooms are.  All that worrying for nothing.  The dressing room was amazing.  If I would have known there would have been such great lights I would have brought my make up.  It was so nice in there, I really can’t explain it.  I could definitely get used to this I thought.  It is rumored that in the guys dressing room there was a Fuse ball table.

As everyone was talking, because by this time we are all pretty much friends.  All of a sudden it was time to go on.  We all line up, and take our spots on stage.  Being on orchestra hall stage is a stunning experience.  You can feel the great musicians on the stage and you feel apart of them.  I think this as I take my seat and start to warm myself up before tuning.  All of the songs we played that night turned out amazing.  The sound in the hall is nothing like you have ever heard.  The acoustics are really good.  It was almost out of a fairy tale.  I say almost because at the end our conductor told the back row to stand and me and a couple other people stood too.  Then we realized that she was going row by row of musicians to make them stand.  Well, one little mistake will not hurt the show.  That was the most thrilling experience of my life, it was the first time I have felt like a professional musician.
