Lenka: Album Review

A critical review of her new, self titled album.

Lenka is an Australian import whose so-called sense of talent can only leave us praying for better days in the world of pop music. While the tunes themselves are annoyingly contagious, the melodic sound of the piano, simple bass, and basic guitar rhythms are bubblegum. If The Partridge Family, BeeGees, and Natalie Imbruglia were to collectively have a love child, that love child would be Lenka.

Most of the lyrics are completely unmemorable, however in my opinion, the lyrics to the song “Knock Knock” syrupy sweet and many listeners will be able to relate to them. Many women can also relate to the lyrics of the song “The Show”. At the time that this was originally published, the music video for “The Show” was just starting to air on American television. I found that the video overall to be ridiculously annoying, somewhat abstract, and longing to fast forward through time.

I do NOT recommend this album, despite it’s disgustingly happy musical (not vocal!) content. If you ARE considering purchasing Lenka’s self entitled album, I HIGHLY recommend first listening to some previews of this upcoming artist’s music if you value your hard earned dollar.

Well, all I can say is, Zoey, that you are a poor, sad sod. You must have been in a very bad mood that day that nothing would cheer up. It certainly was a “critical” review, but not in the correct meaning, which is more to analyse the music rather than have a tantrum about it. Unfortunately you haven’t understood the genre or been able to hear the musical and lyrical qualities, nor do you seem to have any kind of sense of humour and that’s why the ending of ‘the show’ doesn’t make sense to you. To ‘critique’ your review, I would say you lack the musical knowledge and understanding to be a reviewer. Yes, perhaps you just don’t like that kind of music and that’s fine, that’s your opinion, but if you are going to be a reviewer, you must give the music a bit more of a listen to hear what is really there, and what you have obviously missed.

I couldn’t agree with the above comment more. The Show is a great song. Knock Knock, and Dangerous And Sweet too. He must have been in a very bad mood

Who is this Zoey anyway, who cares about him. Maybe he just wanna get more attention by writing these craps.

This guys crazy! i like lenka and her lyrics are really deep.

No, you don’t get it. It’s a decent review. She’s pointed out a few flaws and have worked on them. The style of girl pop itself is what Lenka’s all about, which I enjoy, but in the end, her music seems to be this up-beat, catchy, Lily Allen sound-a-like, or maybe even Kate Nash.

I personally like this music but you either love it or loathe it, so its easy to understand why she seems to make it out so negatively.

Its a good album, I personally suggest it to everyone.

Who cares about Shane’s opinion of me? I for one don’t :P

  • Zoey7879 June 14th, 2009 at 5:59 pm

Thank you Ringo. Im glad you understand that it’s a matter of opinion. So many people were bashing on it, that they didn’t even realize that I had said two good things in there. It’s an acquired taste, just as you mentioned Lily Allen, Kate Nash, Adele, Joanna Newsom.. I mean if you dont like the sound, you dont like it, and its opinion. But I just LOVE people telling me that I don’t have the right to do this or that simply because I cannot stand someone’s work. Wasn’t in a bad mood like someone suggested, just disgusted by her in general. I like the lyrics to “The Show” and “Knock Knock”, but I DO NOT.. do not do not and will not ever enjoy the music to it or the video… but apparently since I said some bad opinion too Im a horrible person in other people’s eyes… ROFL

Zoey, I personally think that maybe you are OUT OF TREND already…

  • Eric August 3rd, 2009 at 1:54 pm

Whatever, I respect Zoey for using her BRAIN and not giving in to lame musical trends. And yes, Lenka\’s music is the audio personification of LAME. It\’s nothing but sugary, pop-tart crap. And who cares what Zoey\’s interests are anyway, using her unique hobbies as a diss to her are the hallmarks of immaturity and retardation. Grow up \”just me\”.

  • Zoey7879 August 13th, 2009 at 11:02 am

    @ Eric … lol Thanks :)

Oh yes, out of trend would be what to call me…as I once heard … “We are given freedom of choice, yet we choose to follow in everyone else’s footstep. I refuse to follow in the shadow of ignorance.”

If people wanna poke at me for my hobbies, they’re more than welcome to.. Just as I am more than welcome to laugh at them for doing so. There’s nothing at trendy at all about me… But that’s what makes me who I am instead of another sheep in the flock. It does amaze me however, to see how pissy some people get because you do a music review and they don’t agree. It’s also very nice to learn that some readers know how to look up my user information.. OoOoOOOo… I guess I’m supposed to be afraid or insulted?

I seem to always find myself reading the comments for this review when I need a good laugh…

i like her music :) and her lyrics. Just becauase zoey doesn’t like it doesn’t mean other peoples opinions have to change, and she isn’t trying to change your mind. opinions are opinions, everybody has one, there not all the same.

  • Zoey7879 September 10th, 2009 at 7:43 am

@ Lauren … Thank you :) Most people don’t like the music that I prefer to listen to but I’m not going to rag and rip on them about it. Her style is just an acquired taste that I don’t subscribe to is all.

Lenka’s songs are typical Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus I can say

I just went to Lenka’s live performance at Hotel Cafe and I walked out after two songs. I asked for a refund and they gave it to me.
While the musicians were very tight, Lenka herself sounded worse than the bad karaoke coming from the bar down the street.
Not only was she off key and forgetting her own lyrics, the writing was horrible. It reminded me of something you might hear on a kid’s show.

Hmmm, that’s strange @Iknow Thisgirlfromsomewhere. Maybe you needed to stay a little longer. It ended up being a really good gig, but I guess you have to be a genuine fan. A couple of the fans have put up clips on YouTube, if anyone is interested. The sound is pretty rough, sure, but that’s the quality of the camera more than anything else. You still get a good idea of the dynamics of the night. If you are jaded and negative, and hate innocence, freshness and positivity, don’t bother. It’s not for you tough guys out there. Your face might crack with smiling too much…
