The Rise and Fall of Heavy Metal Music

Metal. Has it gotten better or worse?

Over the many years, generations of different music have been brought to Earth, starting from the classical era that brought us Beethoven and Mozart to the New era of Lady Gaga and Lil’ Wayne.

I know what you are thinking and what we maybe all thinking is that not all of this music is describing the world as we know it, because the world consists of peace, war, love, and hatred. So far the only genre of music that is reflecting reality is “Metal” or “Heavy Metal”. Metal according to Wikipedia means “highly amplified distortion”. Bands like Led Zeppelin and KISS, which appeared in the 70s, in my opinion, gave off music that really reflected the definition of Metal above, yet heavy.

Bands of our time like Slipknot and Cannibal Corpse are also the people’s choice, but they have unfortunately lost the essence or magical touch in displaying metal music that is all shouting and growling. Metal will never be the same thanks to Death Metal, Black Metal, and Satanic Metal. I think the only exception is “Children of Bodom”, because their lyrics unlike those of the “Pop Society” are genuinely strong and meaningful.

In my opinion, music should be the mirror of a society. It should reflect the problems that all people are facing. For example, global issues like poverty, violence, starvation, child abuse etc. should be brought up through music to draw people’s attention to those issues and try to find them solutions.

The reason for me choosing Metal is due to the fact that almost all genres whether being Rap, Pop, Hip-Hop, Techno, or even R&B ultimately descend from one sub-genre which I believe to be Metal which belongs to the generic “Rock” division. However, even Rock, is now dead and, unfortunately, so is Metal. I mean what is the point of listening to music that you do not comprehend and cannot relate to. For me, the sound of Metal these days might as well be like grabbing a wooden stick and banging it, wildly and randomly, against a steel container. The 60s, 70s, and 80s will never come back, and even if any artist attempts to re-evoke the spirit that was so memorably redolent in the “Soundtracks of Our Lives”, they will never turn out quite like they used to.

When some people think about the word “Metal” they automatically think growling and screaming, but when I think “Metal” I think expressing the feelings and concerns of society. To me, examples of bands that correctly and wholly embody the notion of Metal, and so deserve acclaimed praise for it, are The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Metallica, Nirvana and so forth…
